Saab has released pricing details on its 2010 9-3 lineup, a newsworthy action in that it wasn’t long ago that “Saab” and “2010 models” appeared to be mutually exclusive terms. Now that Victor Muller and Spyker have graciously relieved GM of the Saab albatross, it’s onward and (ideally) upward for 2010 as the new company, Saab Spyker Automobiles, chases after the profits that have perennially eluded Trollhättan. The most noteworthy ride on just-released the price list? That would be the 2010 Saab 9-3X, the Allroad/Outback style jacked-up, all-wheel-drive SportCombi. Parking one in the garage at your ski home in Aspen will set you back, at minimum, $37,800, including destination. You can check out more high-res pics in the galleries below.

Time to take on the Prius
I’ve met GM’s Bob Lutz a number of times, and I’ve largely been in awe of the guy every time, even though I’ve never really agreed with him on hardly any issue. Consequently, I’m glad that Mr. Lutz is retiring.
It’s not that Lutz didn’t do a lot of great things for GM, he did. Still, his hatred of the Toyota Prius – envy deep down inside I bet – was a constant topic around Lutz for many years, and Lutz’s views cast a huge shadow upon GM.
Some time back, before Michael Jordan retired the second time, but before the third retirement, Coach Pat Riley stated that no one would dethrone the Chicago Bulls until Jordan left the game.
In my over-exagerated opinion, Lutz was GM’s Michael Jordan, and he would have never allowed GM to produce a hybrid to directly take on the Prius. Such a vehicle, unfortunately, would confirm that GM was wrong regarding the Prius and hybrid cars oh so many years ago.

Hyundai Spends Big for the Oscars
Hyundai is slated to be the most high-profile automaker during Sunday’s broadcast of the 82nd annual Academy Awards. But there’s a twist, since strict rules for TV ads mean the Korean automaker can’t use its usual pitchman: Jeff Bridges.
Bridges is a best-actor nominee for the movie Crazy Heart. But the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences prohibits actors who are in the show from participating in commercials during their part of the show. This was a bit of a problem, since Hyundai has eight ads scheduled for its new Sonata and Genesis sedans.
Filling in for Bridges by reading voice-over copy will be Kim Basinger, Richard Dreyfuss, David Duchovny, Catherine Keener, Mandy Patinkin, Michael Madsen and Martin Sheen.
“It took seven stars to fill the void, but we’re excited about the cast we’ve lined up for Oscar night,” said Joel Ewanick, Hyundai Motor America vice president of marketing, in a statement.
Each 30-second spot is valued at over $1.2 million, meaning the ambitious Korean automaker spent over $10 million in stealing the spotlight at this year’s Oscars. Hyundai is in the second year of a three-year contract as the national automotive sponsor of the event.
