2011 Hyundai Sonata door latch recall gets official
Filed under: Sedan, Government/Legal, Recalls, Safety, Hyundai

A couple weeks back, Hyundai put a stop-sale on its freshly minted 2011 Sonata sedan because a front door latch could malfunction after a rather labored series of steps. The stop-sale was lifted almost immediately, though, as the Korean automaker was able to quickly ship replacement parts to U.S. dealers, at which point the vehicles in stock were repaired. At that time, though, Hyundai promised to work with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to put out a recall notice for the 1,300 vehicles that had already been sold; a promise that came to fruition this morning as NHTSA put out an official bulletin.
The NHTSA recall notice claims that the front inside door lock switches can remain in the unlatched position under certain conditions, making it possible for the front driver or passenger doors to open while the vehicle is in motion. Hyundai tells us that the latch may malfunction when a front inside door lock switch is held in the locked position while the inside door handle is pulled to open the door.
Sonata owners affected by the recall can bring their vehicle to the nearest Hyundai dealer for the no-cost repairs, which should take about an hour. Hit the jump to read over the NHTSA press release.

Accenture: Fuel economy not enough to mainstream hybrids and EVs
60 percent want hybrids to be superior in every way
According to a new Accenture Study taken in the US, Canada, Germany, France and Italy, 6 out 10 consumers will only buy a hybrid when it is “superior to gasoline-only models in every way.” Likewise, just 36 percent of consumers cited higher gas prices as a reason to buy a hybrid or electric car.
Unfortunately, according to the survey, “those that have driven a hybrid or electric vehicle rate fuel efficiency as being very good to excellent, but most rate the ride, performance, style and maintenance as good at best.”
Thus, Accenture concludes that automakers will need to “achieve competitive differentiation, ” such as “distinctive capabilities, particularly around safety, environmental protection and entertainment” to achieve mainstream success with hybrid and electric vehicles.
On a side note, of the 42 percent that are willing to buy a hybrid or EV in the next few years, 80 percent are interested in hybrid cars rather than electric vehicles. Read more…

REPORT: Kia to drop Borrego for 2010

Kia will drop the Borrego for the 2010 model year after only a brief stint on the scene beginning in late 2008, according to The Car Connection. Introduced just as the auto industry began its longest winter in the wilderness (which actually began in the summer with a gas price spike and continued into fall’s financial crisis), the Borrego has had a rough go.
Kia moved only 9,510 units through November, less than half of what it expected in 2009 sales. It’s unclear if the Borrego will find life again after 2010, but the good news for consumers is that the ’09 model comes with incentives practically spilling from the trunk.
This includes $3,000 cash back on all trim levels, $1,500 for trading in a competitor’s vehicle (Buick Enclave, Pontiac Aztek, the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and other SUVs all qualify), $1,500 for owner loyalty, $400 for recent college grads and $500 for military service, just to name the most relevant.
