Greenlings: Who will be the main players in the electric vehicle space?

Electric vehicles (EVs) are about to arrive in big numbers in the streets of America and, if you haven’t already, you will soon experience your first sighting. Maybe not next month and maybe not this summer, but rest assured, sometime in the next 18 months it is very likely you will spot your first Chevy Volt or Nissan Leaf (or Brammo Enertia or Navistar Modec or …). Then it will happen again. And again. As oil becomes more expensive and batteries and other EV tech becomes better and cheaper, electric motoring will become an integral part of the mobility landscape.
With the re-introduction of this alternative drivetrain (a lot of EVs existed in the early 20th Century) many new companies, as well as the traditional manufacturers, will be fighting it out for a piece of this growing pie. While it’s impossible to accurately predict the eventual size of the pastry or who will seize which slice, the near-term situation is becoming increasingly clear. If you’re wondering how your early-adopter neighbor (or yourself) might be rollin’ in the next year or two, skip with us past the break and take a look at what’s coming up.

Report: U.S. Postal Service says it might cut Saturday delivery to curb emissions
Filed under: Etc., Legislation and Policy, Green Daily

The United State Postal Service (USPS) has discussed dropping Saturday delivery several times in the past. Often, the USPS cites budget concerns and has proposed the five-day delivery schedule as a solution, an option many are unhappy with. So now we’re hearing a different approach, and it jumps on the “go green” bandwagon. The USPS is saying reducing emissions is a primary reason for dropping Saturday deliveries. Clearly you can’t argue with a company trying to save the environment, right?
According to the USPS’ recent proposal, its hard to argue against dropping a day of delivery. How does reducing emissions by 503,000 metric tons sound? Or that eliminating a day’s delivery has the same environmental impact as removing 96,000 vehicles from our roads a year! These are just a few ways to show that eliminating one day of delivery is really driven by a desire to save the planet.
The USPS is taking this “green” approach to try to gain support and overcome the powerful unions that are resisting the move to eliminate a delivery day because it will result in the loss of 40,000 jobs. Environment versus jobs? We don’t want to be the ones to make that choice.

Werkstatt Racing races to raise resources to run in American TTXGP
Filed under: Etc., EV/Plug-in, On Two Wheels, USA, Racing

Werk Statt, a motorcycle repair and racing outfit headquartered in San Francisco and founded by the indomitable Jennifer Bromme (right) has decided it really wants to be a part of the first “zero-carbon” road racing series held in America, the TTXGP. They’ve got a line on a bike and have assembled a team that includes a manager, riders, mechanics and fabricators. All that remains is the small matter of raising $20,000. By Tuesday.
We’ve seen innovative fund-raising by aspiring TTXGP teams before and hey, if they can do it in Sweden, it should be just as possible in a country with over 33 times as many people. Can I get a witness? Werk Statt is offering everything from ad space for larger sponsors to bragging rights and t-shirts for smaller supporters.
Can they do it? Well, according to their IndieGoGo project page they’re already up $340 and we did mention the team boss is indomitable, right? This is, of course, a prime opportunity for companies in the electric tech space to promote their own brands (Tesla, Fisker, Enerdel, Boston Power, Sakti3…we’re lookin’ at all y’all) and perhaps even prove the worth of their own product in a high-profile platform. If you’re interested in going big time, check out their pitch after the break.

Plug In America test drives the Chevy Volt
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, Chevrolet, GM

What happens when members of Plug In America (PIA) spend some time with the Chevrolet Volt? The rest of us get to ride along in this relaxed video. One way you can tell PIA is more interested in the way the vehicle drives and how it works instead of how it looks: there is just one single full-frame shot of the car in the entire 23-minute video. The rest of the video is either a POV shot from inside the car while PIA members drive a closed loop and General Motor’s Tony Posawatz talking about the charging system the Volt will use, V2G and V2H connectivity (that’s vehicle-to-grid and vehicle-to-home) and other items. If there’s a better group of “civilians” to ask Posawatz some pointed questions than the PIA folks, we don’t know about them.
From the sound of it, the video was shot a few months ago (Posawatz talks about being a year ahead of launch and it looks like Dodger Stadium in the background. The Volt was there late last year) even though it was posted to YouTube last week. Even with the delay, this is EV video worth watching. Check it out after the jump. Thanks to Andrej for the tip!

Petrol Car vs Diesel Car and Hybrid Car vs Fuel Cell Car
I would quite like to make an informed decision but currently cannot.
I’m an engineer and quite capable of working out the pros and cons given the basic data. The problem currently is that the data is either produced by vested interest or is incomplete.
I spent 20 years when younger and fit, cycling 5000 miles a [...]

The Future of Dodge and The Viper
Join us this Sunday on MT Radio as Ralph Gilles, Dodge President and CEO and Senior VP of Design, will join us trackside from Long Beach Grand Prix. We will talk Dodge Motorsports including the Dodge Viper Cup Spec Series and NASCAR. Ralph is a Viper racer himself and we touch on that during the interview as well. With Dodge releasing the final edition series of the current generation Viper, we will ask MT Radio listeners and readers to tell what changes they would like to see in the next generation Viper. What do you think? Keep it same or evolve it into a more high tech machine? We will also talk with Ralph about the future of the Dodge Brand including the recent separation of the Dodge and Ram Truck brands. Dodge has plans to unleash five all new or significantly refreshed models by yearâs end; we talk to the Dodge CEO and President about that as well.
Sunday will also bring us a visit with former LA comedian and now TV Host Moto Man. We will also get an update on the Motor Trend Auto Show upcoming in New Mexico. Saturdayâs show will include a trip down memory lane with the King of the Kustomizers George Barris. The Batmobile is most recognized vehicle of the 20th century, but do know what vehicle he used to underpin the vehicle?

Tata Nano gets a French Invitation
Moselle Development Agency of France has invited Tata Motors to invest in Moselle province to manufacture the Nano Europa. Daimler’s Smart city car is also being manufactured at Moselle and Canadian automobile component manufacturer Magna has also set up its unit at Moselle.
According to the Agency, the cost of land there is around 10 Euro per sq meter which is one-tenth of land costs in Germany & Luxembourg. The province is well connected to major centers via road, air and river transportation. The availability of raw materials such as steel and plastics required to build a car is also good. Currently Mercedes A Class, Mercedes Evobus, Opel and Ford Focus are being manufactured in less than 150 km away from the province.
