Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn is still really, really bullish about the Leaf electric car
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Nissan, AutoblogGreen Exclusive

Every time we hear Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn speak, he kind of bowls us over with his strong belief in the all-electric Leaf and plug in vehicles in general. At the groundbreaking for the Smyrna, Tennessee battery plant last week, he once again expressed complete enthusiasm for electric vehicles (EVs). Yeah, we weren’t surprised, either, but it was still good to hear this much hasn’t changed. Here’s how Ghosn described the Leaf in its current state:
Just last week, I drove the Leaf to confirm its performance and I can tell you this is a car for the 21st Century. It’s a roomy five-seater with a spacious trunk. Its IP system gives the driver useful information, not just about the car, but connecting the car to its environment, acceleration is immediate, stability is great, driving is a pleasure. On top of all of this, we have the quiet, clean, eco-friendly benefits of a zero-emission car.
Don’t just ask Ghosn, though. He said the people are speaking up in favor of the car in big ways. On top of the 13,000 Leaf reservations, which exceeds Nissan’s available Leaf production capacity this fiscal year, 130,000 people have registered their interest in a Leaf. Online is where it’s at, Ghosn said:

Kia Soul Hamsters return (U.S)

The new advertising campaign for the 2010 Kia Soul will be top-heavy with hamsters. The South Korean carmaker is even rolling out a line of “Hamstar” clothing for followers of the cuddly creatures.
Kia said the clothing, which is featured in the advertising, will “soon be available for purchase by fans at http://www.hamstarclothing.com/.”
The ad campaign likens the Soul to other “boxy rides — represented by toasters, washing machines and cardboard boxes,” said Kia Motors America in a statement. The hamsters also rap the title song’s lyrics, “You can get with this, or you can get with that.”

“Given the success and popularity of the hamsters in the initial Soul launch with a spot that won Nielsen’s Automotive Ad of the Year, it made sense to bring them back for a new campaign,” said Michael Sprague, Kia Motors America vice president of marketing. “The newest experience is rich with details in the hamster world.”

Video: 2010 Chevy Camaro SS gets switched on hydraulics
Filed under: Aftermarket, Coupe, Etc., Videos, Chevrolet

Chevrolet products are no strangers to hydraulics, but models that get the height-altering technology usually go by names like Impala or Caprice, not Camaro – and they are usually decades old, not 2010 models.
We say ‘usually’ because apparently an Arizona lad has gone and thrown some extra pistons underneath his gunmetal gray Camaro SS, and the result is a pony car that goes from limbo to lofty in a couple of secs. It nothing else, we can’t help but think it’d make a great doppelganger Decepticon for Transformers 3. Follow the jump to check out the vid, but sadly, there’s no three-wheel motion on display
BMW i1 Electric Coupe
According to the British magazine AutoExpress, the BMW is going to release another unusual model – it’s about a small coupe, which in size will be smaller than the BMW 1-Series. Moreover, such a machine will be equipped with an electric (!) engine, and it will be called BMW i1.

British journalists are certain that i1 will be the first model in the new line of BMW, which still bears the code name Megacity. In addition to the coupe in the family Megacity should appear more compact hatchback and the length of about 3 pm Also on this platform will create a new little Mini, which will be considerably less than the current Mini.

NYC seeks Taxi of Tomorrow; is UniCab the answer?
Filed under: Concept Cars, Work, Specialty, Design/Style

A couple of years have passed now since the New York Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) announced its search for a vehicle that would replace the taxis of New York City with something that better fits the times. The TLC created a website for creative types to submit ideas for the “Taxi of Tomorrow,” and one of the more interesting proposals to come in over the last couple of years is something called the UniCab.
The groundwork for NYC’s Taxi of Tomorrow is quite simple:
- Meets highest safety standards
- Superior passenger experience
- Superior driver comfort and amenities
- Appropriate purchase price and ongoing maintenance and repair costs
- Smaller environmental footprint (lower emissions and improved fuel economy)
- Smaller physical footprint (with more usable interior room)
- Compliance with appropriate Americans with Disabilities Act requirements
- Iconic design that will identify the new taxi with New York City
Born out of those guidelines, the UniCab looks nothing like a traditional taxi, aside from the yellow color. The UniCab features seating for four passengers, an automated ramp for those with disabilities, an infotainment center that displays intended routes and attractions along the way and outward sight lines that allow all of the passengers to get a great view of the glorious city of New York. Though nothing more than a design sketch right now, the UniCab could change our perception of taxis in the future and make hailing a cab the hip, green thing to do. Hat tip to Zelda!

Toyota, Daimler partner on fuel cells
Forever just around the corner?
Partnerships the new Toyota way?
Last week Toyota hooked up with Tesla on electric cars and this week Toyota is set to partner with Daimler on fuel cells. Not bad for a company that is often criticized for being too insular.
