Venturi owner gets into motorcycles with Voxan buy
Filed under: EV/Plug-in, On Two Wheels, Europe/EU

Gildo Pallanca Pastor picked up French automaker Venturi back in 2001 after it had sunk into bankruptcy. Gildo has since produced a unique line-up of Sacha Lakic-designed electric vehicles, including a couple of sports cars and a pair of solar-paneled wagons. Now, he’s doing it again, only this time the distressed French company is motorcycle maker Voxan. The goal is the same however. The previously produced gas-powered (and coincidentally, Sacha Lakic-designed) machines will remain “collectors’ pieces” while a new generation of all-electric bikes are developed.
If you’re the type to hold your breath while you wait for your battery-bike, don’t. The time to launch of the first product could be as long as three years. While we can’t say for sure what type of bikes the new Voxan will build, a statement about the transaction intimates there will likely be a performance-oriented machine developed. Hit the jump to read the official blurb for yourselves.

Mercedes appoints new MD (UK)

Mercedes UK has appointed Gary Savage as its new managing director – hardly a year after he left Audi to head up Citroen’s UK operations. Savage replaces Dermot Kelly, who will retire at the end of June 2010.
Wilfried Steffen, president and CEO of Mercedes-Benz UK, commented; “Gary Savage has consistently delivered significant business results in all his previous roles and firmly established his professional reputation within our sector.”
He added: “Dermot Kelly has played a major part in driving forward the Mercedes-Benz passenger car strategy, making Mercedes-Benz and smart the successful brands they are today. I would like to wish Dermot well and at the same time welcome Gary to the company.”
MV Agusta USA head confirms small-displacement model in the works
Filed under: Spy Photos, Motorcycle
This news will likely come as little surprise to anyone that’s been paying attention to Italian motorcycle manufacturer MV Agusta over the last several years, but we recently got the chance to speak with Larry Ferracci, Director of Operations, MV Agusta USA, and he went ahead and confirmed what we’ve all long suspected, saying, “A smaller displacement bike is definitely in the plans for MV Agusta in the near-term future.”
We recently got to spend some quality seat time aboard a brand new 2010 MV Agusta Brutale 990R (expect a full review soon), and the experience left us hopeful that some of that same magic can be applied to a somewhat smaller and slightly less expensive middleweight triple platform. Judging from the latest sets of spy photos rolling out of Italy of what appears to be just such a prototype, our wishes may soon be granted.
Conversely, the unsteady ground on which the storied Italian brand currently finds itself may not bode well for the middleweight’s near-term release. Cross your fingers.

Report: Mini working on city car
Filed under: Concept Cars, BMW, Mini, UK, Rumormill

Here in the U.S., the Smart ForTwo has proven less than successful considering the needs of most of drivers. Sold here on the merits of its efficiency, the Smart’s true element is in the cities of Europe, where the small size allows nose-in parking and a diesel powertrain that’s actually pleasant to drive. Mini and its BMW parents think that there may be something to Smart’s success, even though the company has said in the past that small city cars aren’t profitable.
According to an Autocar source, a Mini city car concept may debut within the next year. Part of the impetus for the reversal is BMW’s backing of a three-cylinder engine, as well as a heavy focus on component sharing with the upcoming BMW MegaCity and other models under the BMW umbrella, along with new production techniques. The car should be smaller than the current Mini, though larger than the Smart. Details like chassis layout and styling have not been divulged, though back in the Rover days, Mini showed off the Spiritual concept (pictured above) and there was talk of a production version. However, how it fares in the marketplace will hinge on how well BMW packs value and the trademark Mini verve into its tiny shell.

Harley-Davidson confirms XR1200X for U.S. in 2011
Filed under: Motorcycle

Harley-Davidson’s sportiest Sportster is about to get a wee bit sportier for the 2011 model year, as The Motor Company has just announced that it will begin offering the XR1200X here in the States for the 2011 model year at a price of $11,799. Although originally announced a year ago, the model has so far only shipped to customers in Europe – odd for a brand that celebrates its American heritage so passionately, but whatever.
In any case, we’re happy to welcome the XRX to the fold, as it combines the air-cooled and fuel-injected 1200cc V-twin engine and its 74 pound-feet of torque at 4000 rpm with a suspension worthy of its 40-degree lean angle capabilities. Included in the springy bits are Showa’s well-regarded Big Piston front forks with adjustable rebound, compression and preload along with dual Showa rear shocks with 36mm pistons and piggyback nitrogen-charged reservoirs.
Up front, a pair of Nissan 292mm full-floating rotors are clamped by four-piston calipers. Seat height comes in at 29.2 inches and rear-mount pegs couple with dirt track-style handlebars to offer a relatively sporty posture. Color choices consist of either black or white in H-D’s matte denim finish, both with blacked-out powertrain, exhaust and wheels. Those wheels are highlighted by an orange stripe that matches the rear springs. It’s certainly a looker. See for yourself in our high-res image gallery below and click past the break for the press release.
Range Rover turns 40

The first Range Rover was rolled out from the UK factory way back in the year 1970. Since then many other companies tried to launch their types of SUVs but the Range Rover stood the test of times. Since 90s SUV segment become very competitive and new SUVs rolled out from different manufacturers.
Land Rover offered combination of luxury and on-road drive quality of a Jaguar and good off-road drivability unlike the Jeeps, International Scouts and Land Cruisers. Rover and Jaguar was acquired by Ford in late 90s and now Tata Group is the proud owners of the two legendary marques – Jaguar and Land Rover. Since its launch Rover sports the same badge on all its vehicles.
