Porsche begins European delivery of Cayenne V6 and diesel
Filed under: Diesel, MPG, Porsche

In Europe, Porsche has begun customer deliveries of both the gasoline and diesel V6 versions of the all-new Cayenne SUV. Both new models are equipped with the eight-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission and are about 20 percent more fuel efficient than the outgoing variants.
The 3.6-liter gasoline V6 is rated at a combined 23.8 miles per gallon (U.S.) on the EU test cycle. Its 300 horsepower combines with the Cayenne’s significantly reduced mass to accelerate to 60 mph in just 7.8 seconds.
The diesel Cayenne, which may or may not ever come to the American market, continues to use the Volkswagen Group 3.0-liter TDI V6 with 240 hp and offers similar acceleration to the gas engine model thanks to its prodigious torque. The diesel gets an EU combined rating of 31.8 mpg (U.S.). All 2011 Cayennes are also equipped with Auto Start Stop to eliminate most engine idling.

Mazda working on new rotary engine for RX-8 heir

Mazda is working on a new rotary engine for the RX-7 descendant that can run on either petrol or diesel, and offer improved fuel economy compared to the recently terminated RX-8 coupe.
The two-stroke 16X engine is designed to correct the shortcomings of Mazda’s most recent rotary engine, including its high oil consumption and lack of torque in the mid-range. Sources in Japan say the new unit has achieved considerable improvements in fuel efficiency.
But the final go-ahead has not yet been received from Mazda’s top executives. Mazda is still working out how to attain the best mixture of performance, economy and emissions. In its current situation, the 16X is expected to give the RX-7 about 300bhp and enable it to reach 60mph in less than 5 seconds.

Avenged Increased Sevenfold: Spyker plans massive sales increase on C7 Aileron?
Filed under: Convertible, Coupe, Performance, Plants/Manufacturing, Earnings/Financials, Spyker, Specialty, Luxury

Here’s a shocker – Dutch supercar manufacturer Spyker is looking to increase sales of its C8 Aileron to 250 units by 2012. That’s a sevenfold increase compared to the meager 36 vehicles the company managed to move in 2009. How will they do it? For starters, production will be moved to CAPP Manufacturing, Ltd. in England, allowing for greater production volume than in the past. So far, Spyker has sold just total of 214 cars since 2002. But the company also plans to make the C8 Aileron more attractive to American buyers by offering the car with a new automatic transmission.
The company is hoping that the new gearbox will make the car comfortable enough for buyers more interested in the vehicle’s luxury aspects than its performance credentials. Spyker says that the company received a good bit of demand for an automatic C8 from buyers in the U.S., China, Russia and the Middle East in the past.
News of the expanded sales targets also dovetails nicely with word that Spyker will be selling its wares through select Saab dealerships here in the States. It looks like we can forget about there not being enough of the $240,000 C8 Ailerons to go around.
Report: Tesla IPO to happen week of June 28
Filed under: Toyota, Earnings/Financials, Tesla

It looks like Tesla Motors will finally be going public the week of June 28, if a report in the Wall Street Journal is correct. The long anticipated stock offering was originally planned for the fall of 2008, but the global financial melt-down made that impossible. Tesla is hoping to sell 11.1 million shares at a price of $14 to $16 a share for a total take of up to $178 million.
The share offering must happen sometime this year under the terms of the recent agreement between Tesla and Toyota if the Japanese automaker is to proceed with its plan to invest $50 million in the California-based electric car maker. At $15 per share, Toyota would get about 3.3 percent of the company or about one-third of what Daimler got last year for a similar investment.
Aside from a single month in July 2009, Tesla has never turned a profit in its seven-year existence and is unlikely to do so until after the Model S goes on sale, now expected to happen in 2012. As of March 31, 2010, Tesla sold 1,063 Roadsters and there is no longer a waiting list for the electric sports car. Tesla officials have declined comment on the IPO report.

Study – Cheap plug-ins end foreign oil dependency in 2020!!!!
New battery makes EVs 1/2 cost of gas vehicles
The end of oil!
Almost 10 years ago I began closely following fuel cells, believing the hydrogen economy was set to revolutionize America’s energy paradigm. Eventually, however, it became obvious that fuel cells, while improving, were still decades away from effective change. Thus, I became a fan of hybrid cars.
