Shell Dialogues hosting “future of energy” webchat July 22nd

There’s a lot of energy talk around here, but some of the most fun is about the future and thinking about the innovations that may forever change our perception of energy production. For example, what about solar energy beamed in from the moon? Want something a little more down-to-earth? Check out these sweating plants that could be the key to a cleaner future.
We’re not guaranteeing that these ideas will be part of Shell Dialogues’ upcoming webchats on July 22nd outlining the future of energy, but maybe readers can bring them up. The chats, appropriately called “Big ideas for the future of energy: aspirations and realities,” might debunk some energy myths and provide an outline of realistic expectations for the future.

Nissan has introduced the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) edition of the all-new March supermini, which went on sale this week.
Unlike its ancestors, the fourth-generation March is produced in Thailand, to lower manufacturing costs. Although, Nissan has set up a unique inspection process at its Oppama plant in Japan – that produced the previous generation model – to make additional quality checks on the Thai-made variant.
The Micra/March will be manufactured in India, China and Mexico, where manufacturing costs are low. Nissan has plans to sell the new supermini in more than 160 countries around the world including Australia, U.S, Turkey and Russia.

Report: Ford 6.7-liter Power Stroke Diesel to churn out 800 lb-ft of torque

In February, the specs on Ford’s 6.7-liter Power Stroke turbo-diesel V8 were announced: 390 horsepower and 735 pound-feet of torque. A month later, General Motors laid out the specs on its 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel: 397 hp and 765 lb-ft. According to PickupTrucks.com, the Duramax could be shoved to the corner again later this year, when a high-output Super Duty blows out the footlights with 400 hp and 800 – or more – lb-ft of twisting gumption.
According to the unknown source within the Blue Oval, Ford’s new 6R140 TorqShift six-speed transmission has strong enough guts that Ford can open up the taps on that engine a bit. And give GM something to think about. If this absurdly powerful dream does come true, the behemoth motor will be seen in the second wave of 2011 Super Duty pickups that begin production in a few months. No word on whether early adopters of the 6.7-liter will get a free upgrade.

It Will Never End: Mercedes-Benz reportedly working on nine-speed automatic

According to Autocar, an admission by a Mercedes-Benz engineer proves that the company is working on a nine-speed automatic transmission. That isn’t exactly new, since talk of such a beast has been broached before. The difference this time is that Autocar’s sources says the gearbox will be “introduced on large-capacity engines.”
With no numbers for context we can’t be sure what’s meant by “large-capacity.” However, Motor Trend reported that the baby SLS would get a nine-speed double-clutch transmission for it’s twin-turbo-V6-hybrid engine, and Automobile said that all of the next generation S-Classes, arriving in 2012, would “have hybrid powertrains and a new nine-speed automatic transmission.”
We don’t expect any of those engines to be of particularly large displacement, especially now that the SSK AMG appears to have gone from a twin-turbo V8 to a V6 twin turbo with electric assistance. Still, we have no doubt we’ll see a nine-speed transmission somewhere. And when the Mercedes engineers opine that “nine ratios is the maximum that is technically possible, as well as being the most that customers will be able to cope with,” we believe they’re wrong. A company is really going to leave double-digit transmission bragging rights on the table? Uh, no. Can I get a ten-speed… anyone…?

Fiat Grande Punto 90HP launched in India
Fiat India has launched a more powerful Grande Punto powered by a powerful 1.3L multijet diesel engine producing 90 bhp as compared to 75 bhp by the regular diesel version
The engine uses variable geometry turbo, which makes the engine to breathe easier and produce more power. It will be available in only Emotion trim and will be sold along side 75 bhp variant.
The car is priced at Rs 6.79 lakh (ex-showroom New Delhi) and will compete with Hyundai i20 in terms of both power and price. The customers have various accessory packages to choose from which include rear spoiler, chrome exhaust, body decals, aluminum pedals and leather seat covers.

French car maker Citroen is preparing to launch serial production of two sports concept cars – Survolt and Metropolis. The first week ago, took part in the Le Mans Classic race at Le Mans.
