Paris Preview: Toyota Verso-S gets an iQ-inspired makeover

Small MPVs might not be the hottest commodities here in the United States, but these little functional wonders sell like hotcakes in other markets, especially Europe. To keep up with the growing segment, Toyota has given its Verso hatch a rather substantial makeover, and we’ll see the all-new Verso-S debut at the Paris Motor Show in just a few weeks.

Upon its launch in the UK in early 2011, the Verso-S will be the shortest B-segment MPV in Europe – the car is less than four meters (157 inches) long. It’s a sharp little hatch, too, looking like the lovechild of a Honda Fit and a Toyota iQ, the latter of which supplies many of the visual cues seen here on the new Verso-S.

Toyota is still keeping quiet about the full specifications, but expect the floodgates to open at the end of September closer to the little MPV’s official debut. Read more in Toyota’s press release, after the jump.

Electric vehicle advocate Paul Scott “intends to be the number one Leaf salesman in the world”

For years, Paul Scott has been promoting electric vehicles (EVs) as a co-founder of Plug-In America, but he’ll soon be promoting one EV a bit more than others in his new job as a Nissan Leaf salesman. Yes, after a private lunch with Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn in June and discussions with his local Nissan dealership (Santa Monica Nissan) through the summer, Paul will soon be the go-to guy for anyone who is interested in buying a Leaf in the area. It’s sort of poetic that, after years trying to convince legislators and the public to back EVs, Paul can now literally sell them one (he will also keep selling solar PV systems from SolarCity). On his blog, Paul wrote:

I came to the conclusion that I wanted to personally help Nissan get the car into driver’s hands. One by one, I want to replace those filthy internal combustion engines using 60% foreign oil, with clean, powerful motors using domestically-produced, renewable kWh generated from sunlight and wind. … I intend to be the number one Leaf salesman in the world. When you are ready for yours, look me up.

Next Kia Rio (UB) Spied For The First Time

Kia has been on a great momentum lately with a tidal wave of new releases, and it looks like the transformation of the line-up continues on course with the all-new Rio, spied today for the first time. Code-named “UB”, the upcoming redesign of the Rio subcompact ostensibly carries on the chiseled family look of recent Kia’s as it is yet another work of Peter Schreyer.

The exterior of the next-generation Rio is almost a dead-ringer to the larger K5/Optima, similar to how the new Accent casts off the impression as a miniaturized version of the Sonata. We can definitely see the influence from the K5/Optima in the front fascia of the new Rio, with familiar sights like the corporate “tiger-nose” grille and the set of sharp, stretched headlights.

The side profile is characterized by front fender vents (also a cue from the K5/Optima) and a rather unique C-pillar design. The rear fascia is mainly clad in camo for now, but from what we can see, it is definitely reminiscent of the Forte’s. The black machined finish alloy wheels, meanwhile, look directly lifted off those from the K5/Optima, except the four-lug design that confirms its Rio identity.

How about powertrain technology? The new Rio is expected to share its platform with the upcoming 2011 Hyundai Accent, so you can expect to see gasoline direct injection – GDI technology applied to at least one of the Rio’s engines (possibly the 1.6L gasoline four-cyl. engine).

More details about the next generation Rio, as well as other Kia plans for 2011, will be revealed at the forth-coming Paris Auto Show in October. The new Rio is tentatively expected to hit the market by the end of 2011.

LA Auto Show preview: Infiniti to launch 2012 M35 hybrid

Infiniti has announced that it will officially debut its first hybrid at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November. The M35 hybrid first appeared – badged as the Nissan Fuga hybrid – at last fall’s Tokyo Motor Show and is propelled by Nissan’s first in-house hybrid system. The M35 is powered by a retuned Atkinson cycle version of the 3.5-liter VQ V6 paired with a 50-kilowatt electric motor and a lithium ion battery pack that uses the same type of cells that power the Nissan Leaf.

The motor is a disc-type unit packed between the engine and the six-speed automatic transmission in a similar fashion to the systems from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Porsche. Infiniti claims the M35 will deliver V8 performance with the fuel consumption of a four cylinder. The Fuga goes on sale in Japan this fall and the M35 hybrid arrives in the U.S. market next year as a 2012 model.

The Department of Energy and the EPA want to update the fuel economy stickers currently provided for car consumers. In addition to the current fuel economy estimates and yearly fueling costs, the government wants to provide an A+ through D environmental score beginning in 2012 according to reports.
