Foton Motors, Freescale Semiconductor to create joint lab for hybrid, EV development

China-based Foton Motors and Texas-based Freescale Semiconductor will combine their collective knowledge to open the Foton-Freescale Automotive Joint Lab. The lab will focus on developing software and system-level solutions for use in upcoming Foton vehicles. Both companies will collaboratively work towards developing relevant electronic control technology for applications that included hybrids and electric vehicles (EVs). By focusing on electronics and, more specifically, on software development, the Joint Lab hopes to introduce technology that can reduce vehicle emissions while also increasing the “economic performance and comfort of vehicles.”
Speaking on behalf of Foton Motors, Wu Xeubin, the company’s vice president and director of engineering research said:
Foton Motor has been committed to promoting energy and environmental technology in the automotive industry, and has proved continuous breakthroughs in new energy-driven vehicles over the past years. The opening of the joint lab will provide wings for Foton Motor products to fly into a promising future.
Wings and flying? We’re not exactly sure what this statement implies, but it seems that the Joint Lab will be trying to help Foton Motors reach new heights.

Will the next Stig be a woman? UK bookies lay odds

Is the Stig about to get a sex change? William Hill, one of the UK’s largest bookmaking operations, places the odds of the next Stig being a lady at 4-1 and has reportedly seen a good amount of action on that particular wager. Gamblers can also bet on what color the next Stig will wear, with pink currently holding 5-1 odds.
Ireland’s largest bookmaker, Paddy Power, is also in the mix, posting odds on both the color of the next Stig and who will be behind the mask (they stick with all-male options, though). Paddy Power is also taking bets on how White Stig will meet his demise. The long shot, at 20-1 odds, is currently an assassination by Tom Cruise (not a solid bet, really, as such behavior seems unbecoming of a high-level Thetan).
If Top Gear does go the Lady Stig route, who do you think will suit up? We’re going with Sabine Schmitz. She clearly has the ability, plus she’s already friendly with the Top Gear crew.

TESLIN TO FORT NELSON, B.C., CANADA
We started out in the cold and rain of Teslin, the Yukon, today, and covered 480 miles, nearly a third of the Alaska-Canadian Highway. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began construction on the 1,500-mile two-lane, which links Dawson Creek, British Columbia with Fairbanks, Alaska, in 1942, first for war purposes, then for the Cold War.
Jack Lewis beat us to the road on his V-Strom, and we eventually catch up with him as he’s warming up with coffee at one of the seasonal motel/restaurant/gas station/souvenir stores some 150 miles up the road. Many of these establishments, which usually serve as an entire town, already are closed up for the season, even before Labor Day. It’s autumn here: Trees in the southern Yukon and northern British Columbia still are mostly green, though the lush northern Yukon mixes vibrant yellows and oranges with the evergreens.
