Lightweight Avion travels 1,478 miles on 12.4 gallons of diesel; that’s 119.1 mpg!

Craig Henderson piloted his 1,500-pound, diesel-powered Avion from Blaine WA, to Mexico – a 1,478-mile journey – and he burned just 12.4 gallons of fuel along the way. Some simple math shows that this featherweight vehicle achieved an astounding 119.1 miles per gallon, but the mileage numbers don’t tell the whole story.
Henderson and partner Bill Green began designing the Avion in 1984. They set out to build a prototype high-mileage vehicle and sell it to the public. The business floundered, but Henderson couldn’t let his work on the Avion be for naught. He tinkered for years and made modifications that reduced the vehicle’s weight and improved its aerodynamics. The end result tips the scales at just 1,500 pounds and packs a puny, 800cc diesel engine. Due to the Avion’s light weight and enhanced aerodynamics, a scant four horsepower is required to maintain speeds of 55 miles per hour.
Henderson organized the run from Washington to Mexico as a promotional stunt to showcase the vehicle’s abilities. On August 29th, Henderson fired up the Avion and took to the roads. His 1,478-mile trip ended three days later near Chula Vista, CA and eclipsed the Avion’s own record-setting result of 103 mpg back in 1986. In 2008, the car managed 113.1 mpg. The car was entered (and then dropped out of) the Automotive X-Prize but Henderson’s promotional run has renewed his interest in selling the Avion. We’re inclined to believe that this mileage champ could win buyers over on its fuel-sipping abilities alone.

Tokyo to L.A. – The Hard Way – In a Suzuki Kizashi: Day 20
PORTLAND TO MCCLOUD, CALIFORNIA
Our stop in Portland, Oregon, like our stop in Vancouver, is too brief. It’s September, though, and Labor Day is giving way to autumn, with lots of work ahead of us, so we make our way to one of our final roadside attractions, Crater Lake.
A meteor hit 7,700 years ago to create the deepest lake in the United States. At 1,943 feet, it’s also one of the deepest in the world. The five-mile-wide lake has a near-vertical shoreline, with cliffs nearly 2,000 feet high. Obviously, it’s a great photo op, especially to me — I missed it on previous trips to this state.
Tokyo to L.A. now is reduced to four horsemen of the Suzuki Kizashi. Gordon Green is riding shotgun with me in the lead car, and Motor Trend photo intern Mike Shaffer, having replaced Suzuki technician Frank Wisniowicz, shares the second car with Brian Vance. Wisniowicz left Vancouver for his home in Chicago the day before Labor Day. Jack Lewis on the V-Strom and Kevin McNulty in the Equator are back in L.A.

The all-new 2011 Bentley Continental GT was recently revealed online. Initially we only had pretty pictures to look at, but information comes fast and furious on the world wide web. We have gotten our hands on a video of the luxurious grand tourer doing what it does best.
The video (located just beyond the jump) is a bit low on action but high on design and style. These pictures and videos only serve to whet our appetite for some (heated leather) seat time in the new Continental. The car is set to make its world debut at the Paris Motor Show so be sure to tune in to our coverage of the entire event. We can’t give this Bentley our stamp of approval just yet but details such as the 567 horsepower W12, a top speed of 198 miles per hour, climate-controlled seats and an updated (finally!) touchscreen have us leaning towards “huzzah!”
