Mini unveiling new concept on September 23 and you can be in attendance… if you live in the UK
Filed under: Paris Motor Show, Crossover, Mini, UK
Mini is unveiling a new concept on September 23 in London, and you can win exclusive tickets to join select journalists and BMW Group employees at the live unveiling. All you have to do to enter for a chance to win is e-mail facebook at mini dot co dot uk with the subject line ‘MINI Design Concept Event’ by Monday, September 13. Excited? Ready to enter? Don’t get too jazzed up – Mini is only offering this contest to folks who live in the United Kingdom.
It’s pretty disappointing that the contest is only available to UK residents (we totally want to go), but we are indeed interested in what lies under the skin-tight body wrap seen here. It appears to be some version of the Mini Countryman, but we can distinctly see the bulge of two door handles on the driver’s side, ruling out any chance that this concept will be the rumored coupe version of the Mini crossover. John Cooper Works treatment, perhaps?
If you live on the English Isle and are interested in attending the event, head over to Mini UK’s Facebook page for more info.

Zipcar issues annual “low car diet” challenge
Filed under: Transportation Alternatives

Each year, Zipcar issues a “Low-Car Diet” Challenge, and there are only six days left for participants try and get in and, “pledge to personally give up their vehicles for 30 days and find other ways to meet their transportation needs.” This year’s month of moving differently starts September 14, and participants will score benefits on top of a chance to rethink getting around. On top of being awarded a free year-long Zipcar membership, dieters will get promotional tea and snack items, so the “diet” part of the plan is really more for your wheels than your belly. Although biking and walking will help both.
Zipcar will be selecting 30 people per participating city – for 2010, this means Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, Toronto, Vancouver and Washington D.C. – to join the diet. Dieters will be asked to work the whole social media thing while they track car miles saved and other interesting stats. Last year, for example, there were 252 participants, and they:
- increased their miles biked by 132 percent
- decreased their miles driven by 66 percent
- lost a total of 413 pounds
Sound like a good idea? Sign up here.

Wanted and Desired: 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic
According to the tabloids, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie just purchased a million dollar home in Italy, their third. For that not-inconsequential sum, the world’s #1 supercouple gets a “vineyard, stables, a movie theater, a gym, two swimming pools, all in 18,000 square feet with 15 bedrooms and seven bathrooms.” Not bad at all. Alternatively, they could have purchased a car. Not just any old car however, but very specifically a 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic. There are only three in the world, though maybe four and depending on how you feel about rebuilds, just two. Ralph Lauren owns one, an Argentinean gazillionaire owns the controversial second car, the fourth car is rumored to have been destroyed before WWII and we don’t know who owns the first car, chassis #57374, that you’re looking at here.
We do know that it’s sitting for another month or so in the very center of the ultra-exquisite new Mullin Automotive Museum housed in the former Otis Chandler building in Oxnard, California. If you haven’t been (or heard), the Mullin Museum is a living, breathing homage to all that is gleaming, highly-glossed and gorgeous from the 1930s. And it helps if said object is French. This particular Bugatti Atlantic sold for an undisclosed sum of money back in May to an anonymous buyer. Rumor has it that you’re looking at the most expensive car in the world, and I’ve heard thirty to forty million dollars bandied about more than once. Luckily for us — or me, at least — the fantastically wealthy buyer decided to let the Mullin display his (or her) Type 57SC Atlantic. Just to clear up the elephant in the room, no matter how many times we asked, we were told nothing about either the price and the owner’s identity. So be it.

Report: Ferrari Enzo successor will be a hybrid
Filed under: Hybrid, Ferrari

Sorry, Ferrari purists, but even the mighty Prancing Horse isn’t immune to the need to increase fuel economy. According to Autoweek, Ferrari Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo has confirmed that the successor to the Enzo throne will come equipped with a hybrid drivetrain. According to Montezemolo, the electrified supercar will borrow heavily from the company’s 599 HY-KERS concept that debuted at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. That vehicle used hybrid tech derived from the kinetic energy recovery system that Ferrari experimented with on its F1 vehicles.
Previously, Ferrari has said that the incorporation of a battery pack and an electric motor would allow the company to continue to offer high-cylinder-count engines while offsetting fuel consumption and emissions. The company has also made it clear that it intends to begin moving toward smaller models to further reduce weight.
The news came as Montezemolo announced that he has no intention of moving from his post at Ferrari to greener pastures in the Italian government. The chairman said that he fully intends to stay at the company long enough to help craft the vehicles in the next product cycle, each of which will follow in the footsteps of the Enzo successor.

BMW’s odd campaign for a new hybrid prototype
Not a final design.
Shouldn’t blog about this hybrid?
BMW is working on what appears to be a new hybrid prototype. Obviously, that’s a pretty normal affair for an automaker, it’s the marketing campaign around this hybrid that is so odd.
