U.S. sales of clean diesel models buck auto industry’s slumping trend

Last month, the U.S. automotive industry experienced its weakest August sales since 1983. Overall, sales dropped off nearly 21 percent from the numbers recorded during the Cash-for-Clunkers-boosted month of August 2009. In addition, sales of hybrids tanked, dropping by 40.4 percent this August compared a year ago and even the vaunted Toyota Prius couldn’t escape the automotive industry’s woes.

With the industry suffering, we’d expect sales of clean diesel vehicles to follow suit, but that’s simply not the case. Clean diesel vehicles recorded a 52-percent increase in year-over-year sales and experienced a 20-percent boost in sales volume for August as compared to the numbers reported in July. Whereas sales of the Prius fell off by some 37.5 percent, the quintessential clean diesel, the Volkswagen Jetta TDI, fared amazingly well with a year-over-year increase of nearly 30 percent. Though year-to-date sales of clean diesel models (48,275 units) still fall well short of hybrids (178,754 units), the gap is slowly shrinking.

Proof Positive That Chrysler Can Still Compete

We’re finally beginning to get a glimpse of exactly what Chrysler has been up to since snagging a whopping .6 billion in federal funding during the automotive implosion of 2009. While General Motors has been busily chugging along like nothing happened, the Pentastar hasn’t exactly rolled out a wave of new and refreshed models. There’s been an obvious hitch in the Chrysler giddy up, and those loyal to the company’s three brands have been forced to settle for little more than slightly reworked option packages… until now. As 2010 comes to a close, the company is pulling the covers off a range of new models, each as important to its future success as the last.

At the front of the pack is the 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee, a vehicle that’s become synonymous with Chrysler’s righting of itself in the public eye thanks to some of the most well-crafted advertisements in the industry. If you don’t know what we’re on about, we highly suggest pointing your browser toward YouTube and spending a few minutes watching the company’s “The Things We Make, Make Us” spot. Be prepared for an overwhelming sense of patriotic duty, as well as a burning desire to pick up a hammer and bang some nails.

Next gen SSC Ultimate Aero – fastest car in the world

Manufacturer extreme hypercar – American company Shelby Super Cars – declassified second generation of its legendary sports car SSC Ultimate Aero. This car, despite the fact that he did not participate yet in any of the record check, have hastened to christen the “killer Bugatti Veyron”.

At one time, SSC Ultimate Aero TT first generation was officially recognized as the fastest production car in the world. American hypercar could accelerate to 412 km / h, and this is the result recorded by the representatives of Guinness Book of Records. Citroen to offer optional e-HDi micro-hybrid system on diesel-powered DS4

Citroen previewed its new design language at this year’s Geneva Motor Show and will apply those styling ques to its DS4 five-door hatch, which will debut at the Paris Motor Show in a few short weeks. Stylistically, the DS4 looks muscular, taut and ready to take on its hatchback competitors. But if its good looks don’t win buyers over, maybe its advanced powertrain options will help it swoop up sales.

When it launches in 2011, the DS4 will be available with five powertrain choices, including three gasoline engines and two diesel sippers. Power output runs from 110 horsepower on up to 200 hp, but our interest lies in Citroen’s optional e-HDI micro-hybrid system, which will be available at launch on the HDi 110 mill. According to Citroen, the optional eHDi system incorporates:

• An economical HDi Euro V diesel power plant
  
• A new generation Stop & Start system, which instantly cuts out the engine when the car comes to a halt (red lights, traffic jams).
  
• A second-generation reversible alternator and an e-booster function that restarts the engine instantly (0.4 seconds)
  
• An electronically controlled alternator that recovers energy during braking;
  
• An electronic gearbox system (EGS) with optimized gear changes.

Citroen claims that its e-HDi system can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 15 percent in congested urban settings, but hasn’t disclosed any finalized figures for the e-HDi-equipped model, nor has it revealed pricing for the micro-hybrid option. We hope to gather full details of Citroen’s DS4 and its stop-start system in Paris, but for now, you can hit the jump to read the company’s release.
