When Chris Harris reviewed the new Audi RS4 and pitted it against the Mercedes C63 AMG Estate, he said the car is a brilliant RS Audi, but not just as brilliant as the big Merc. The Merc is much simpler and much more fun to drive and to live with. Same is Autocar’s verdict. The new RS4 is technically flawless, almost, but it’s too complicated and has options for fiddling with the chassis and suspension that you don’t’ really need. If it had less computer power and more oversteer, it could be just as good as the C63!
Audi RS4 has a fantastic engine though. Its 4.2 FSI produces 331 kW (450 hp) at 8,250 rpm, with 430 Nm (317.15 lb-ft) of torque available between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm. The normally aspirated, high-revving V8 accelerates the top-of-the-line Avant from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 4.7 seconds on its way to a governed top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph). This can be increased to 280 km/h (173.98 mph) upon request. However, average fuel consumption is a mere 10.7 liters of fuel per 100 km (21.98 US mpg).

Lexus is hoping the launch of the new Lexus RX270 will help deliver the dramatic sales boost it needs to capture a greater slice of the of the market from its German rivals in the booming SUV segment.
Lexus kicked off the new RX range this week with the launch of the RX270, slated to go head-to-head with the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Range Rover Evoque.
The RX270’s key draw will be that it offers more space and standard equipment at the equivalent price point of $ 69,900 (before on-road costs).
When you look at Lexus’ year-to-date sales figures to May, it becomes desperately clear why the Japanese carmaker needs this shot in the arm.
Lexus’ sales of 2,592 are well short of Audi (5585), BMW (6877) and Mercedes-Benz (8474). Even Land Rover, which doesn’t sell sedans, has sold significantly more vehicles than Lexus this year.
DETROIT, Michigan — It never fails. Just when traffic begins bunching up or you’re forced to make an evasive maneuver, the phone rings. And it’s your boss or your spouse or another important person in your life. But even with Bluetooth hands-free, it may not be the best time to take the call and take your mind off of driving. To make cars more proactive in this process, Ford researchers are working on using input from the vehicle, advanced safety systems and the driver’s body to preempt phone calls or other electronic distractions.
Using real-time data from the throttle, brakes and steering wheel, and meshing it with information from radar sensors and cameras used in systems such as blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure prevention, Ford has developed an algorithm to create a “driver workload estimator.” This is then used to manage infotainment and communication features to potentially keep drivers from becoming distracted, and the automaker is also augmenting this with info from biometric sensors embedded in the steering wheel, seat and seatbelt to measure driver stress to further fine-tune the experimental system and provide earlier warnings.
“Modern cars have rapidly evolved to have an astonishing degree of awareness about traffic and the environment, using radars and other sensing technology to create a sort of sixth sense for the driver,” Jeff Greenberg, senior technical leader for Vehicle & Enterprise Sciences with Ford Research & Innovation, told Wired. ”Our researchers are extending that sixth sense to include being aware of the driver by using biometrics — sensing heart rate and breathing. The next step is building in intelligence so that the car can help reduce workload in demanding situations or when high driver stress levels are present.”
Bugatti, Bugatti Veyron, Car News — By MR on June 27, 2012 at 5:42 pm — No Comments
According to a report at AutoExpress, Bugatti is working on a successor to the Veyron, which could be a hybrid. The new hypercar is also expected to be lighter, faster and is likely to bear the Veyron badge again.
“We are working on the next super-sports car,” said Bugatti’s chief vehicle engineer, Jens Schulenburg to the UK car magazine. The Veyron successor will remain the flagship model including the latest technology and materials available on the market.
“The big challenge on the next car will be reducing weight – we are looking at some incredible technologies, such as wheels made entirely from carbon fiber. Hybrids are definitely something we are looking at too,” Schulenburg said.
With these kind of statements we could easily say that Bugatti is planning to release a hypercar, which is faster than the record-holing Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. This fastest road-going car boosts 1200hp, a top speed of 434km/h (269.8mph) and a sprint time from 0 to 100km/h (62mph) of just 2,5 seconds. 300km/h (186mph) is reached in 15 seconds.
Romania’s low cost Dacia brand has released final pricing for its first model to touch UK ground, the Duster compact SUV that will be available for pre-order from June 28 with first deliveries in January 2013 at a starting price of £8,995 (US$ 14,000 or €11,300) on-the-road for the two-wheel drive variant.
To put it into context, that’s less than the basic version of the Suzuki Splash tall city car that starts at £ 9,325 for the 1.0-liter petrol model.
Dacia is also claiming the bragging rights for the most affordable (new) 4×4 model as the all-wheel drive version of the Duster begins at £10,995 (US$ 17,200 or €13,800).
While the Dacia brand may be Romanian, all right-hand drive versions of the Duster will be built by the all-new Renault-Nissan Alliance factory in Chennai, India.
In Britain, the Duster will be offered with a choice of two Renault Group engines. The 1.6-litre petrol delivers 104hp (105PS) and is linked to a five speed manual gearbox returning 39.8 mpg UK in 4×2 and 35.5 mpg UK in 4×4, with CO2 emissions of 165g/km and 185g/km respectively.
The Goodwood Festival of Speed for 2012 will be running from the 28th June to 1st July at Goodwood House in the UK.
The festival is a display of some classic and contemporary racing cars, luxurious supercars and of course world-class drivers who will demonstrate the speed and power of these vehicles. In addition there will also be some helicopters and motorbikes showcased at the event.
The theme of this year’s festival is Young Guns – Born to Win. The Goodwood FOS official website explains it as the celebration of “drivers and riders and designers and engineers whose supreme talent and insatiable thirst for speed shocked the establishment, affording them immediate superstar status.”
In the spirit of the 2012 theme, a number of young F1 world champions will be making an appearance at Goodwood House including Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Sebastian Vettel.
