Shifter No. 83 Name That Shifter, No. 83: 1971 AMC Javelin

On Monday we presented this week’s shifter and asked you to identify the make and model of the vehicle from whence it came. Our 4th of July mystery car couldn’t be more American, folks—the first commenter to correctly identify it as a 1971 AMC Javelin was R88Colvin. (That’s “American Motors Corporation” to you kids out there.) He will receive a Save the Manuals button and sticker as a reward.

The Javelin pictured here is from our October 1970 issue. It was refreshed for the ’71 model year with more-expressive styling and upgraded engines. The base motivator was a 135-hp six-cylinder, but a 401-cubic-inch V-8 making 330 hp was available with the sporty AMX model. At the time, we described the Javelin as “a car of undeniable appeal” that would be embraced by those committed to defending underdogs. Come to think of it, that concept sounds pretty darn America.

Toyota LandCruiser Review

Australia is the single largest market in the world for the iconic Toyota LandCruiser. More than one in 10 of all LandCruisers ever built have been sold here.

In Australia’s booming SUV market, the Toyota LandCruiser 200 Series has the distinction of taking a massive 77 per cent slice of total sales for large SUVs priced under $ 100K.

It’s a huge lead, despite its direct competitor, the Nissan Patrol, coming with a substantially lower retail price of $ 70,490 for the top-of-the-line 3.0-litre Ti turbo diesel (Nissan will launch a new-generation Patrol in Australia in January 2013).

In comparison, our test vehicle is the Toyota LandCruiser 200 GXL turbo diesel, which is priced at $ 88,990 before on-road costs.

AutoExpress: First Drive F20 BMW 125d M Sport

UK magazine AutoExpress drives the F20 four-door BMW 125d equipped with the M Sport package. The F20 1er Hatchback made its debut last summer and it was offered in Europe with both petrol and diesel engines. The 125d with M Sport package is considered to be, so far, the flagship of the new 1 Series family.

The M Sport pack brings changes to the exterior, including both aerodynamic and stylistic improvements. Starting at the front of the vehicle, the front air dam has been widened to accommodate larger air intakes which feed the cooling systems.  Moving to the side valence, a more sculptured prominent line is drawn above the rocker panels, adding the appearance of muscle and weight to the car.  Finally, at the rear BMW has incorporated a more aggressive and sculpted rear bumper, rounding out the look.
