Subaru BRZ sells out in three hours

The Subaru BRZ has sold out in just three hours despite its exclusive online sales process being delayed by a system crash.

Subaru Australia’s unique buying set-up for its new rear-wheel-drive sports car went live 45 minutes late at 12.45pm after the system was overwhelmed by an excess of online customers for the Subaru BRZ all trying to hit the ‘buy’ button at the same time.

Subaru Australia spokesperson David Rowley has confirmed to CarAdvice that its limited supply of BRZs sold out in just over three hours.

“By 3:47pm (EST) today all remaining Subaru BRZs had been sold and that we’re taking orders through to January, when we are due to receive our next allocation,” said Rowley.

In the first five minutes of the site going live, there were eight orders and in 90 minutes 50 Subaru BRZs had been sold.

Mazda Teaser grille 626x382 Mazda Gives Us a Brief Glimpse at the New 6 [Updated]

Update 7/16: Mazda has released another video previewing its new 6 sedan. This brief shadowy look reveals an aggressive crease flowing from the front fender to the door.

Mazda has released a video briefly highlighting the front end of the all-new 6, and, as we expected, it takes many styling cues from the Takeri concept that debuted last year at the Tokyo auto show.

1,469 2011-2013 Volvo S80s recalled over buggy transmission software

2012 Volvo S80 1,469 2011 2013 Volvo S80s recalled over buggy transmission software

Swedish maker Volvo and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have just issued a recall for several select 2011-2013 S80 models due some buggy transmission software (shiftware?).

According to the release, the recall involves some 1,469 Volvo S80’s, all of which may have this buggy transmission software that could potentially prevent the cog swapper from downshifting into fourth from fifth. What may happen then is the engine could then drop below its idle point, in which case the car could just stall when in motion.

Volvo will reprogram the transmission free of charge, and owners will be notified beginning July 19. Should any question arise, they also said owners can call at 1-800-458-1552.

For full details, check out the press release after the jump.

Finally, after a run of bad luck so far this season, everything went right for Travis Pastrana in the fourth round of the 2012 Global RallyCross Championship held at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, NH. Pastrana won his heat in his Red Bull/Discount Tire Dodge Dart edging out Tanner Foust in his Rockstar Energy Ford Fiesta.

Pastrana then went into the final ten-car race and managed to haul in both Foust again and Samuel Hubinette in a Scott-Eklund Saab 9-3 to take the checkered flag. Brian Deegan in a second Rockstar Energy Ford Fiesta finished third while Foust eventually dropped to fourth, due to engine problems.

The key to Pastrana’s success in both races was passing on the unusual elevated hairpin bend made of out of steel plates that took the rallycross course up and over the pit wall on the main straight at the one-mile oval track.

Jaguar to offer new 4- and 6-cylinder engines in the US

The manufacturer will equip two of its three models with the smaller engines, including a 4-cylinder, not offered by Jaguar since 1948. “We have only V-8s in a market filled with V-6s”, points out Andy Goss, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, North America.

On the XF sedan, Jaguar will offer a 2.0-litre, 240-hp turbocharged 4-cylinder – a serious rival to the BMW 5 Series and the Cadillac STS, among others. The 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 will be available on the XF (340-hp) and on the larger XJ (380-hp). These new engines will only be offered in the US and will be teamed with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel economy ratings for these new engines will be released in August.

2013 Nissan Note Unveiled

Nissan Note 1 2013 Nissan Note Unveiled

Nissan Invitation concept becomes a production model as the new Nissan Note. It has lost some of its conceptual charm, but still, it’s a very good-looking mini-MPV and rather sophisticated for a global mainstream B-segment car that it is. The car will first launch in Japan with two engines including the new supercharged HR12DDR (DIG-S) and the HR12DE.

As mentioned the Note is a feature-rich car. It comes with a lightweight next-generation XTRONIC CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) for all grades with an Idling Stop System for 2WD, the newly-developed three-cylinder supercharged, direct injection DIG-S engine, and an Around View Monitor (AVM) which is included for the first time in a compact car.

Calling a car a ‘global model’ used to be a dignified way of saying it is cheap and rubbish. Not anymore though. The new Note looks great – what with the ‘Squash Line’ profile, striking head and taillights, and bold front grille – it has a nice interior – spacious, welcoming with a flowing line above the instrument panel, which inspired by ripples in sand, and high quality materials – and it has decent features.

Nissan says the new Note is designed to become  the most user-friendly car in its segment. Pricing and specs for different markets will be announced later.

Road Test: 2013 Nissan GT-R Black Edition

Road Test 2013 Nissan GT R Black Edition Road Test: 2013 Nissan GT R Black Edition

The Nissan GT-R is back on our front page for a road test. It isn’t the first time we write a review about the world’s cheapest supercar and share with you our true passion for Godzilla, which stole our hearts as one of the finest and most astonishing cars on the planet. For the new model year, the Japanese sports car received a number of upgrades which we will review. The special Track Pack will also pass by our verdict.

The 2012/2013 model is nothing more than the 2011/2012 model with a series of additional upgrades. Last year’s model should be considered the first official facelift in the life span of the sports car since its release in 2010. The new model is a minor upgrade, but it is the best GT-R ever to be offered for sale. Kazutoshi Mizuno’s team in Japan managed to refine the vehicle further. They upped the power, improved fuel economy, lowered emissions, retuned the suspension, smoothed the transmission, and enhanced the interior offering better materials and options.

The changes are marginal and in essence the new model is very similar to the 2011/2012 model year, commonly referred to as the 530hp-model. So as a start the Nissan GT-R is still huge, brutal, scarily fast, and epically agile. Godzilla only got an injection through its vanes.
