2014 Mazda6 to Premier in Moscow

In recent weeks, the Russian Mazda branch has released a few video teasers along with a full front-view photo, but the Mazda6 will officially see the light of the day in its world debut at the Moscow Motor Show, from August 29 to September 9.

Although there aren’t a lot of specs available at the moment, we do know that it’s the second model of the new Mazda generation to incorporate SkyActiv technology. With its latest design theme dubbed ‘Kodo – Soul of Motion,’ the 2014 Mazda6 is also the first car to feature the i-ELOOP, a new brake energy regeneration system. It will also be equipped with a 2.0-litre, 160-hp engine coupled with a 6-speed transmission.

The model, totally redesigned for the first time since 2007, will be one of the most anticipated vehicles to be unveiled at the Show.

BLOODHOUND Project Readies Desert Race Track

Desert Race Track 1 BLOODHOUND Project Readies Desert Race Track

The BLOODHOUND land speed record project is right on track with things going slowly but steadily for an attempt to reach 1000 mph (1600 km/h) in a unique Super Sonic car next year. Obviously they needed a proper venue for such ambitoius project, so they chose a desert in Hakskeen Pan in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa to create the world largest race track.

This track covers a staggering 10 million square meters, and needed a team of 300 workers and volunteers to clear it. Even though the clearing project requires another two months, the team has already cleared 6,000 tonnes of stones from the 500m wide, 20km long stretch of desert.

On this occasion Andy Green, a serving officer with the Royal Air Force and the holder of 1228 kilometres per hour speed record, and the man who will be driving the 1000 mph car, paid a visit to the site and helped with the operation.

Rotax Adds to Fuel Efficient Aircraft Trend

Photo: Flight Design USA

OSHKOSH, Wisconsin – Fuel efficient engines are turning out to be one of the big themes at this year’s Airventure, the world’s biggest aviation gathering. Austrian engine maker Rotax is showcasing a fuel injected version of its popular four-cylinder 912 model. The 100 horsepower engine is the most popular in the light sport category of aircraft, and the new fuel-injected version with an integrated computer control is 21 percent more fuel efficient than its carburetor equipped sibling.

If adding fuel injection and an onboard computer controller to an engine hardly seems like news, you would be right if you’re coming from the automotive world. Many in the aviation industry lament the decades old technology – many decades in most cases – that dominates the power plants for small aircraft. The industry often cites the low volume of engines/aircraft produced compared to the auto industry, as well as difficult certification processes to bring a new engine to market.

The Flight Design CTLSi is one of the light sport aircraft using the new fuel efficient engine, and Flight Design USA’s Tom Peghiny says the company’s airplanes were already very fuel efficient, as his customers often cite the efficiency as one of the top reasons behind buying a Flight Design airplane. The new fuel-injected model cruises at around 130 miles per hour while burning just 4.5 gallons per hour, nearly 30 miles per gallon. Of course, in an airplane you hope for a tailwind to improve that number, rather than the dreaded headwind.

“The simplicity of operation and the fuel consumption is something our customers really like about the new engine,” Peghiny says. “A lot of our pilots want the newest technology and appreciate efficiency.”

Even though the Jaguar C-X75 will be sold as an ultra-expensive supercar, the company has worked hard to make it a fuel-efficient plug-in hybrid. All electric driving range will come in at 37 miles – 0 to 60 mph in electric mode will come in at 6 seconds.

Honda Drops New Photos and Video of European-Spec 2013 CR-V Crossover

Honda Drops New Photos and Video of European Spec 2013 CR V Crossover
The new generation of the Honda CR-V has been on sale in North America since last December, but the European version of the compact soft-roader was only just revealed in production form and it won’t be arriving in showrooms until late October – early November, depending on the country.

We have already detailed the European model in our previous post here, but Honda just came out with some new photos and static video footage of the crossover that you will find right after the break.

In Europe, the new CR-V will be available at launch with a tweaked 2.0-liter i-VTEC petrol delivering 153hp (155PS) and a 153hp (155PS) 2.2-liter i-DTEC diesel, while early next year, the range will be enhanced with Honda’s all-new 1.6-liter turbo diesel rated at 118HP (120PS).

Notably, for the first time in Europe, the CR-V will be offered with a choice of both two- and four-wheel drive versions.

Besides the different engine lineup from the North American model that is available exclusively with a 185hp 2.4-liter gasoline unit, the Euro-spec CR-V also sports a revised front bumper, headlamps with LED daytime running lights and rear LED lights, reshaped mirrors that incorporate turning signals and a fin-style antenna.

Hartge promises 438 HP for tri-turbo diesel engine

German tuner Hartge is preparing to launch their own power kit for BMW’s first tri-turbo diesel engine. Based on the popular 3.0 liter inline-six (N57D30), but with an extra turbocharger, the innovative powerplant produces, in standard form, 381 horsepower and 740 Nm (546 lb-ft) of torque.

The size, arrangement and interplay strategy of the three turbos are designed to guarantee maximum power delivery across a wide rev band. The system comprises two relatively small turbochargers and one large turbo, which join forces precisely to deliver the amount of power required.

According to the driving situation, the low moment of inertia of the small turbochargers is exploited to the full to deliver razor-sharp responses, while the link-up with the large turbo is maximized to generate as much charge pressure as possible.

There’s something fascinating about “how it’s made”-style programs. Even the most mundane items can seem interesting as they whirr down a production line gaining attributes as they go.

When the object is already interesting, like an electric car, that’s even more reason to watch.

To that end, keep your eyes peeled on Discovery Channel on August 4, as a program detailing the history and construction of the 2012 Mitsubishi ‘i’ will air.
