Citroen previewed its new design language at this year’s Geneva Motor Show and will apply those styling ques to its DS4 five-door hatch, which will debut at the Paris Motor Show in a few short weeks. Stylistically, the DS4 looks muscular, taut and ready to take on its hatchback competitors. But if its good looks don’t win buyers over, maybe its advanced powertrain options will help it swoop up sales.

When it launches in 2011, the DS4 will be available with five powertrain choices, including three gasoline engines and two diesel sippers. Power output runs from 110 horsepower on up to 200 hp, but our interest lies in Citroen’s optional e-HDI micro-hybrid system, which will be available at launch on the HDi 110 mill. According to Citroen, the optional eHDi system incorporates:

  • An economical HDi Euro V diesel power plant
  • A new generation Stop & Start system, which instantly cuts out the engine when the car comes to a halt (red lights, traffic jams).
  • A second-generation reversible alternator and an e-booster function that restarts the engine instantly (0.4 seconds)
  • An electronically controlled alternator that recovers energy during braking;
  • An electronic gearbox system (EGS) with optimized gear changes.

Citroen claims that its e-HDi system can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 15 percent in congested urban settings, but hasn’t disclosed any finalized figures for the e-HDi-equipped model, nor has it revealed pricing for the micro-hybrid option. We hope to gather full details of Citroen’s DS4 and its stop-start system in Paris, but for now, you can hit the jump to read the company’s release.
