Jaguar’s XF sedan is a looker—even more so following its slick 2012 refresh—but even since its inception in 2009, it has made do without a truly high-performance variant. That changes for 2014, because Jaguar is applying its fire-breathing R-S treatment to the XF; the resulting XFR-S is making its debut at the 2012 L.A. auto show. Not since the early-2000s has Jaguar fielded a high-po sedan in the vein of BMW’s M5 or Mercedes-Benz’s E63 AMG—remember the S-type R?—but the wait may have been worth it. That’s because while the S-type R’s power figures were slightly lower than those of its German competition, the XFR-S’s prodigious power is bested only by the new M5.

Road Test: 2012 Jaguar XFR

Jaguar, Road Tests — By MR on August 13, 2012 at 6:00 pm — No Comments

Road Test 2012 Jaguar XFR Road Test: 2012 Jaguar XFR

Following in the line of the BMW M5, Audi RS6 and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG performance sedans, the XFR is the first and only R application to the basic XF sedan introduced in 2008. Now in its third life as a facelifted 2012 model series, the XFR is expecting a more powerful sister to arrive pretty soon, the XFR-S. It left us just enough time to have a closer look at the automaker’s current luxury and performance sedan.

Jaguar’s ‘R’ cars effectively play on the company’s motorsport heritage, giving the Indian-owned British brand an answer to performance divisions of its German luxury competitors – RS for Audi, M division for BMW and AMG for Mercedes-Benz. With the XFR, XKR and XKR-S in their portfolio, the British have what it takes to show their racing heritage.

The newly facelifted model series of XF features mainly design and interior upgrades. Like the rest of the XF range, there are new, slimmer, XJ-style headlamps along with a reshaped bonnet and bumper. The tail lamps are LED for stop, tail and direction indicator functions. The revised boot lid finisher has a glossy black lower edge for a cleaner appearance and the boot features power closure on all models.

Report: Audi RS6 coming next year with 572-hp 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8

audis6red 03 627x393 Report: Audi RS6 coming next year with 572 hp 4.0 liter twin turbo V8

Audi is finally preparing its competitor to the BMW M5 and the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG – the all-new Audi RS6. First things first, the Audi RS6 will be available as a sedan and an estate (station wagon) and not just an estate like the new RS4, which is probably the most disappointing thing I’ve seen Audi do.

Either way, word on the street is that the Audi RS6 will carry an upgraded version of the 4.0 liter twin-turbo V8 from the S6, S7 and S8. Output should come around 572-hp, which is the same as the old V10.

The engine will be mated to a dual-clutch 7-speed automatic and of course an all-wheel-drive system. 0 to 62 mpg will come around 4.5 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph.

C&D Test Drive: 2013 BMW M5 vs. 2012 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, 2013 Audi S6

Car and Driver takes three TwinTurbo V8 performance sedans and pit them against each other.  BMW brings to the “war” the 2013 M5, Mercedes responds with its E63 AMG while Audi throws in the 2013 S6. In a horsepower translation, 560 vs 518 and respectively 420 horsepower.

Surprisingly, the underpowered S6 places ahead of the E63 AMG and the M5. So why has InsideLine chosen the S6 over its competitors?

“We’ve been here before with the A7 and the A8: down to the final paragraph of a comparison test musing about how the Audi offers comparable or better features, only slightly reduced performance, and a significantly lower price. Bavarians aren’t big on change, but down here, old regimes are rapidly being overthrown.”

Now let’s have a look at some fragments from their review:

Report: More potent Jaguar XFR-S to debut at Los Angeles in November with 542hp

2012 Jaguar XFR Report: More potent Jaguar XFR S to debut at Los Angeles in November with 542hp

Jaguar’s XF mid-sized luxury sports sedan has proven itself to be a worthy competitor to the latest and greatest from Germany and Japan. As a result through willingness to keep up with the competition and play with the big dogs, all while slightly reflecting the Jaguar’s rich history in motorsports and the production of luxury sports cars, the Coventry-based manufacturer was caught testing an even hotter version of the already-potent XFR sedan.

The head honchos of the brand have acknowledged that an “XFR-S” sedan is on the way—“S” following after the harder version of the XKR coupe, the XKR-S. As if the XFR wasn’t enough?

Speaking of which, the XFR-S is expected to also use the same supercharged AJ-V8 good for 542hp. Though, not much else is known. It is expected however, that this new hot cat will debut at this year’s Los Angeles motor show in November.

For all comparative purposes, the standard XFR comes with a not so shabby 510hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. But those figures are still bested by the two leading competitors in the segment, the BMW M5 with 552hp and the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG with 549hp. So the XFR-S will essentially close that gap in horsepower.
