BMW debuted its latest oil-burning 2014 328d at the New York International Auto Show, which they say is the trickle to a new wave of BMW Advanced Diesels to come in the United States.
We did get a diesel BMW 3-Series in the last E90 generation, the 335d, which was powered by BMW’s renown turbodiesel straight-six. For the current F30 generation, the diesel 3-Series, for now at least, is powered by a 2.0L TwinPower diesel four-banger good for 180hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, mated to a ZF eight-speed automatic. That means the 2014 BMW 328d will sprint to 60 in just over seven seconds.
The best part is that fuel economy is expected to hover around 45 mpg for the highway dashes. The 2014 BMW 328d will first be introduced as a sedan with optional xDrive all-wheel drive and will eventually come in a wagon form with xDrive by fall of this year.
With the 5 Series facelift coming this summer, BMW plans to introduce a new model in its European fleet. The BMW 518d will be available for European customers and is powered by the N47T engine producing 105 kW (143 bhp) @ 4000 rpm and 300 N m (221 lb ft) @ 1750-3000 rpm.
The 143 bhp model was or is currently used in the E81, E87 and E88 118d, E90 and E91 318d, E84 X1 sDrive18d and xDrive18d, MINI Countryman Cooper SD (from 2010) and X3 xDrive18d.
Nearly four years later after its introduction, the 5 Series is due for BMW’s usual life cycle impulse, or as everyone calls it, a facelift. Subtle touches will be applied to the front and rear lights, as well as the front and rear aprons. The side mirrors will get turn signal indicators while chrome design elements are being added to the front fenders.
Inside, the changes are minimal as well. Even the multi-functional instrument display as debuted by the 7 Series facelift was available starting with July 2012 production.

The BMW X5 35d has been selling successfully in the US since its debut in 2009. Now Porsche is bringing its 2013 Cayenne Diesel that has been available in Europe since 2009. Finally, the United States is getting access to some great diesel products that the rest of the world has been enjoying for years.
So how do these two stack up? Base prices are less than $ 1000 off from each other, they have nearly identical dimensions and six- cylinder diesels, so this is gonna be close.

A leaked shot of an internal BMWNA Powerpoint presentation confirms a previous report we published in August: starting in 2013, a wide range of BMW diesels will make their way into the U.S. market.
Earlier this year, BMW made an announcement outlining their high-level plans to bring more diesel models on American soil. At the time the Bavarians only mentioned the engine choices while refraining from placing them into a specific product: a 2.0 liter four-cylinder and 3.0 liter six-cylinder units.
Our own sources said at the time that the following series will get a diesel variant: 3 Series sedan and sports wagon, 5 Series diesel (with the optional xDrive), 740d, X3 and X5.
The leaked slide confirms our report and it also adds a timeline. The 3 Series sedan with a four-cylinder turbo will arrive in the first half of next year, followed by the 3er Sports Wagon in the second half of 2013. Next to receive the diesel treatment is the 5 Series scheduled to arrive in the third quarter of 2013.
BMW will introduce the third generation X5 in late 2013 and along with a new design, the high-seller SAV will continued to be offered with the xDrive35d configuration. For the first time in the U.S., a diesel engine will be offered for the X3 (first half of 2014). While not confirmed, we believe a 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine will be used for the midsize premium SAV.
