The 2013 NAIAS Porsche Stand
BMWBLOG visited the Porsche display at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show during the press days. What follows is a brief summary of what we saw and what Porsche’s up to. What I find most ironic in all of this is how Porsche and BMW are now true market competitors their lineups now directly compete for some of the same customers.
Porsche still sells crazy expensive autos but also has moved down market where as BMW has moved up market with some models breaking into six figures (US prices) and Porsche’s lowest base price is $ 48,800.

2012 was a very, very big year for Porsche and started with customer deliveries of the seventh generation 911, internal code 991. To date, Porsche has released the Carrera, Carrera S, Carrera 4, Carrera 4S and the Targas.

Model overkill? Nope according to Porsche because, the 911 Turbo, Turbo S and 911 GT3, GT3RS, the most anticipated models, are still yet to be unveiled. In 2012 Porsche also started selling a whole new Boxster and then at the end of November, Porsche unveiled the all new Cayman at the LA Auto Show.

Column: The Greatest BMW Concept Cars Never Produced
BMW have always been a big fan and supporter of concept cars. They love the damn things, and 2011 has been no different. With the recent demand for economical and ‘green’ motoring, BMW have been forced to go down the route of miles per gallon, but does that mean they won’t be giving us cars that still fondle down below? Hell no!
The German’s have thankfully kept their priorities in order – just with a few amendments like turbo engines instead of naturally-aspirated ones – and with a whole host of new concepts, we thought it would be a good idea to look at some of the best that BMW never put into production.

BMW M1 Hommage
The original, beautiful, over-priced M1 was the blueprint for all modern M-cars. Without that first flop – sales wise – the new BMW M5 would not be the car it is today. The M1 was a lovely looking car, technically brilliant and as quick as Gandhi in slippers, but it was ridiculously expensive compared to its rivals, and as a result, nobody bought one.

Jaguar’s future: Production C-X16 sports coupe, entry-level sedan, $1.5 million C-X75

Jaguar is expected to ‘sportify’ its lineup over the next couple of years with a bunch of new additions including a new sports car based on the new C-X16 Concept that was shown at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Jaguar officials say that work is also under way on a new compact sedan but that model is still a few years away from hitting your local Jag dealership.
All this is a part of Tata Motors $ 2.45 billion investment in Jaguar and Land Rover over the next 5 years to produce new vehicles, engines and beef up the two brand’s production facilities.
The new Jaguar compact sedan that we’ve been hearing about forever will compete with the likes of the BMW 3-Series, Audi A4, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Lexus IS and the upcoming Cadillac ATS. The model is expected arrive sometime in 2014.

Final week, a rumor was floating close to the new F10 BMW M5 saying that diesel and all-wheel drive variants could be in the works. It will be designated as the BMW 550dM or 550dXM and will be the 1st oil burners to ever obtain an official M-badge from the factory. A super little turbo will be utilised to construct boost for launching while two bigger twin-scroll turbos will supplement for the rest of the engine band. The diesel for the 550dM will acquire a revised cylinder head and will use BMW’s present list of engine technologies, which includes direct injection and BMW’s Valvetronic technique.
In terms of electrical power, the sources mentioned that the 550dM will deliver slightly fewer horses than the standard gasoline V8 M5, which is rated at 560hp and rather expected from a diesel. Also expected from a diesel is monumental torque, which the sources say could push 650 lb-ft of torques.
