Review: BALL Watches for BMW

Renowned Swiss watchmaker BALL Watch released in cooperation with BMW a limited edition series of watches. The BALL BMW watches are built atop the core values of the two engineering-driven companies: performance, mechanical precision and spirit of innovation.

Former Jaeger-LeCoultre designer Magali Metrailler was in charge of the project which produced three distinctive models.

The Classic BALL BMW watch has a 40 mm steel case with a COSC-certified ETA 2892-2 movement. In the most minimalistic way, the fairly large BMW logo is engraved in the dial, which is available in black, silver, blue or gray. Next we have the GMT with its 42 mm case. Using the ETA 2893-2 movement, the watch displays the time in two time zones. Compared to the Classic model, the GMT has a significantly smaller BMW logo placed next to the date which is more appealing to watches aficionados. At the high-end of the spectrum we have the Power Reserve model featuring a 42 mm DLC-black coating case and an ETA 2897 movement. The BMW logo has a similar size and placement as the GMT model.

Courtesy of BALL Watch USA we had the opportunity to extensively review the GMT model with a DLC black coated case that contrasts nicely with the orange accents on the hands. According to BALL, BMW was deeply involved with the design and after two years the final product were ready to hit the shelves. Just like BMW cars, the BALL watches aim to combine sportiness and modernism into a single package.

The curved sides of the watch remind us of some of the BMW design lines we see sweeping across the sides of their cars which not only give the car and in this case the watch some character, but it also gives the impression of luxury. Furthermore, the crown features a subtle BMW logo.

Hyundai debuts its latest 2013 HND-9 Sports Coupe Concept at the Seoul Motor Show in S. Korea

While most of us were busy tackling the debuts of the 2013 New York International Auto Show, Hyundai unveiled a new sports coupe concept at the 2013 Seoul Motor Show in South Korea.

The 2013 Hyundai HND-9 Sports Coupe Concept is being called a design study, much like the 2013 Hyundai HCD-14 Genesis Concept that debuted earlier this year at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show. Hyundai calls the design language “Fluidic Sculpture,” which has helped sculpt and influence some of the current models in existence today, such as the Azera and the new Santa Fe.

The 2013 HND-9 Sports Coupe Concept is designed to house Hyundai’s latest 370hp 3.3L turbocharged and direct—injected GDi gasoline V6, mated to an eight speed automatic.

“HND-9 will give customers a glimpse of Hyundai’s future luxury sports coupe models,” said Suk-Geun Oh, Hyundai’s head of design. “Representing an evolution of Hyundai’s ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ design philosophy, the rear-wheel drive sports coupe concept balances high performance with a sophisticated image.”

And if anything, the 2013 HND-9 Sports Coupe Concept could possibly provide a pointer for what is to come for the next-generation Hyundai Genesis sports coupe.

2013 New York: The 2014 BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo presents itself at the Javits Center

BMW first unveiled one of its latest 3-Series variants, known as the 3-Series Gran Turismo or GT, at this year’s Chicago Auto Show. Now, BMW sought the bigger New York moment by showcasing the 2014 BMW 3-Series GT at this year’s New York International Auto Show.

The 2014 BMW 3-Series GT follows the way of its older sibling, the BMW 5-Series GT, with an all-new sloping rear boot lid. In some ways, it reminds me of the old 1990s E36-generation 3-Series compact…and I’m not quite sure if that’s a good thing.

But still, I think the 2014 3-Series GT looks a lot better than the larger BMW 5-Series GT.

All the engine options from the standard 3-Series carry over to the 2014 BMW 3-Series Gran Turismo, which include BMW’s luscious 3.0L N55 twin-turbocharged straight-six good for 320hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, and BMW’s new 2.0L TwinPower turbocharged N20 four-banger good for 241hp and 258 lb-ft of torque.

2013 New York: The 2014 Jeep Cherokee revival debuts at New York for the first time

March 27, 2013 , New York - There is a new king of the hill in the mid-size sport-utility vehicle (SUV) segment: the all-new 2014 Jeep® Cherokee.

The renowned Cherokee name returns to the Jeep® vehicle lineup for the 2014 model year. The result – the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee completely redefines the mid-size SUV segment, delivering legendary Jeep 4×4 capability, a segment-first nine-speed automatic transmission, fuel economy improvements of more than 45 percent (versus the outgoing Liberty model), superior on-road ride and handling, a cutting-edge, revolutionary design, world-class craftsmanship, class-exclusive technology and more than 70 advanced safety and security features. The Jeep Cherokee is set to delight consumers both on the road and on the trail.

“The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee will be the benchmark for mid-size SUVs with a new level of on-road driving dynamics and fuel economy, while at the same time improving the 4×4 capability that customers expect from Jeep,” said Mike Manley, President and CEO – Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “Jeep Cherokee boasts a new design, a nine-speed automatic transmission and two advanced engines, class-leading capability from three innovative 4×4 systems, more than 70 safety features, and a host of new technology features.”

Jeep 4×4 capability
The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee provides a choice of three innovative 4×4 systems for best-in-class 4×4 capability in all weather conditions. The Jeep Cherokee is the first mid-size SUV to feature rear-axle disconnect, resulting in reduced energy loss when 4×4 capability isn’t needed, improving fuel efficiency. The rear-axle disconnect seamlessly switches between two- and four-wheel drive for full-time torque management and does not require input from the driver.

The Jeep Cherokee offers best-in-class V-6 towing capability of 4,500 pounds.

Jeep Active Drive I
Available on the Cherokee Sport, Latitude and Limited models, Jeep Active Drive I features a single power transfer unit (PTU) which is fully automatic and delivers seamless operation in and out of four-wheel drive at any speed. The system does not require any driver intervention or feedback, delivers yaw correction during dynamic events and improves both understeer and oversteer conditions.

2013 New York: The 2014 Range Rover Sport is here to arouse the NYC urbanite crowd

After many teasers to build up anticipation, the 2014 Range Rover Sport was finally officially revealed earlier today at the 2013 New York International Auto Show.

The 2014 Range Rover Sport goes the way of its lesser Evoque sibling in terms of styling, much in the same way the standard Range Rover did. But the biggest piece of news for this all-new 2014 Range Rover Sport, aside from the new styling, is that this new model benefits from a diet of 800lbs.

The other significant change includes the replacement of the 5.0L naturally aspirated Jaguar-sourced AJV8. In place of that is Jaguar-Land Rover’s new 3.0L supercharged V6. The 5.0L supercharged V8 can still be had in the top of the line Range Rover Sport Supercharged.

Prices start at just $ 63,495 for the base 2014 Range Rover Sport while the top dog 2014 Range Rover Sport Autobiobraphy, complete with the 5.0L supercharged V8, asks for $ 93,295 from its buyer.

Bentley unveils 2014 Flying Spur ahead of Geneva debut with all-new design

After all the teasers, Bentley has finally pulled the virtual wraps off of their latest Flying Spur sedan. Set to debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show in March, the new 2014 Bentley Flying Spur promises a new level of luxury and speed for the brand.

“Bentley’s new Flying Spur is the ultimate luxury performance sedan,” said Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber, Bentley’s CEO and Chairman. “Our engineers have worked tirelessly to ensure that the Flying Spur is the perfect combination of power, comfort, refinement and hand-crafted quality. Fitted with the very latest technology, the new Flying Spur is equipped both for business and relaxation whilst remaining a car to enjoy from behind the wheel.”

Under the hood sits the last generation’s twin-turbocharged W12 engine, displacing 6.0L and good for 616hp and 590 lb-ft of twist, channeled to all four wheels via ZF’s eight-speed automatic transmission. Zero to 60 passes in a swift 4.3 seconds for a top sprint of 200 mph.

Grip is also guaranteed thanks to the all-wheel drive system’s 40/60 rear-biased torque division.

Visually, the Flying Spur retains the same proportions, however the design is far more streamlined. The Quad-headlight design carries over, giving the Flying Spur its signature face. Though the shoulderline appears to be less angular and more fluid, as it carries all the way to the more squared-off rear, which also seems to have taken cues from the recent EXP 9F Concept.

The Continental: Audi’s War of Letters, Industry Politics in Italy, and A45 AMG Ancestors

1x1.trans The Continental: Audi’s War of Letters, Industry Politics in Italy, and A45 AMG Ancestors

Each week, our German correspondent slices and dices the latest rumblings, news, and quick-hit driving impressions from the other side of the pond. His byline may say Jens Meiners, but we simply call him . . . the Continental.

1x1.trans The Continental: Audi’s War of Letters, Industry Politics in Italy, and A45 AMG Ancestors

Audi has dragged up-and-coming Chinese car company Qoros to court over its choice of nomenclature. Qoros is a joint venture between Chinese carmaker Chery and Israel Corporation, and it has hired a number of high-profile executives, including former Mini chief designer Gert Hildebrand, and retains Austrian R & D specialist Magna Steyr to handle much of its development work. Qoros’ cars will be shown at the 2013 Geneva auto show next month, including the GQ3 sedan. Audi, whose crossover lineup uses the Q-plus-number naming structure, has taken offense at the use of the Q in Qoros’ model designation—and the German automaker won a first round at a regional court in Hamburg.
