Tour the 2013 Detroit Auto Show through a Super Gallery of 400+ Photos

The 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit won’t open for the public until Saturday, January 19, (January 16-17 is the industry preview, and January 18, the charity preview) but if you’ve been following our coverage of event, you should know most things you need to know.
While no one was surprised by Detroit’s big three choosing their hometown to launch their new production and concept cars, this year’s show also had major world premieres from Asian and European automakers, too.
Wrapping up our NAIAS report, we thought we’d make a quick review of this year’s most notable offerings.
First things first: the seventh-generation Corvette, by far the most eagerly awaited presentation, undoubtedly impresses with its technology (aluminum frame, carbon fiber bodywork parts, cylinder deactivation) and performance. Bringing back the Stingray moniker is either proof of GM’s confidence in the new Vette or a clever marketing trick.
Next up is another GM product, the Cadillac ELR. That’s an even tougher one to judge. It sure looks delicious – but then again, with the Converj concept as a starting point, Caddy’s designers would have to be on mind-addling drugs to get it wrong. It’s rumored, but not yet confirmed, $ 60k asking price will put it up against some pretty stiff competition, so it had better be much more than just a sleek Chevy Volt if it wants to succeed.
Hyundai Bringing Cosworth Genesis Coupe Concept to 2012 SEMA Show
October 3, 2012 at 9:21am by Sam Schembari

You can always count on Hyundai to bring a gaggle of concepts to the annual SEMA show, and it looks like 2012 will be no different. Hyundai announced that it will be bringing to the show a Genesis coupe concept that’s been modified by famed engineering firm Cosworth. Hyundai says it has no plans for the Cosworth concept after SEMA, but that it is monitoring the public’s reaction to such an offering.
The Cosworth CGRS concept will see the standard Genesis coupe’s 3.8-liter V-6 get a bump in power from 348 hp to 389 and torque numbers increase from 295 lb-ft to 325. These gains can be attributed to the addition of a new intake and exhaust, a new engine-control system, and improved thermal management. Cosworth also adds its off-the-shelf big-brake kit and performance suspension.

Cosworth—the engine supplier to both HRT and Marussia Formula 1 teams—also adds a new front bumper with a new splitter and integrated carbon-fiber brake ducts, a carbon-fiber side-skirt lip, and a rear diffuser—also made of carbon fiber. Bespoke gunmetal wheels and hood stripes, and an integrated trunklid spoiler add even more to the boy-racer look of Hyundai’s satin-gloss–finished concept. More Cosworth goodies unique to the CGRS were added to the inside as well, including: a steering wheel, a shift knob, new pedals, and two-tone sport seats and interior finishes. Read more…

2013 Hyundai Genesis Video Review

Now that you watched the new Subaru BRZ in action, check out another sports car that’s recently been down to Edmunds for evaluation. It’s the new 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe, the 3.8 liter model with 350 hp. The 2.0 liter version of this car is closer to the BRZ as a rival, but apart from the engine the two versions of the Geni coupe are similar. So this should be interesting.
In this video Mike Monticell gives you a tour of the car.
Both Hyundai Genesis Coupe engines receive significant technology upgrades, backing up its new design statement with impressive performance gains. The 3.8-liter Lambda DOHC V6 engine adds sophisticated direct-injection technology, adding 42 horsepower (a generous 14 percent increase) and 29 lb.-ft of torque (an eleven percent increase). Peak horsepower rises to 348 at 6,400 RPM, with peak torque increasing to 295 lb.-ft. at 5,300 RPM on premium fuel. In addition, lambda-engine anti-knock technology gives this V6 the versatility to run on regular fuel. This new direct-injected engine will easily propel the Genesis Coupe from zero to 60 mph in the lower five-second range on its way to an impressive 149 mph electronically-limited top speed. The Lambda V6 intake system also now employs an intake sound induction pipe into the cabin to ensure this engine’s aural character matches its visceral appeal.

What Is It?
It is the not too long ago redesigned Dodge Charger with the Pentastar V-six. We’ve previously tested a 2011 Charger with the V-6, even though. That a single was even rear-wheel drive, too, just like this example. So why are we testing this one particular now? The 1st car weighed just a few pounds significantly less, and it was orange with a black and tan interior this vehicle is all black. Also, this one has the new eight-speed ZF automated where that orange vehicle had a five-speed.
How Does It Drive?
It drives an awful lot like that other V-6 Charger, which is to say like a big German sports activities sedan. There is a masterful balance in between ride and handling, and the automobile is considerably far more agile than its immense dimension would recommend. It nevertheless feels big from behind the wheel, even when you are pushing it, but it moves like a considerably smaller auto.
The eight-speed requires some of the edge off our complaints about gear spacing in the outdated 5-speed, but does not smooth them out completely. Stretching 5 ratios so thin meant that the fiver held onto 1st right up until nearly 60 mph and 2nd right up until past 90, seriously hindering about-town pep. With three extra gears, even though, Chrysler allotted only 1 far more ratio for the 0–100 window, with shifts now occurring around 45, 65, and 100. Green-light readiness is notably increased, but we wonder if possibly one far more gear in that gap wouldn’t have aided more. The Audi A8 has a edition of this same transmission, but with various gearing, its shifts take place about 35, 55, 85, and 105. Of course, its 80-hp advantage also aids it step off with far more aggression. The shorter gearing of the eight-speed versus the 5 also accentuates the Pentastar V-6’s nonlinear powerband, the quicker spurt by way of each gear generating the lulls and surges in delivery more noticeable.
It’s simple to see that Chrysler’s concentrate was the leading end, though, in selecting ratios for its version of the eight-speed. This was not for speed, thoughts you, but rather fuel economy—the Charger hits its 114-mph governor in eighth, seventh, sixth, fifth, and fourth. At 70 mph in eighth, the engine turns just 1500 rpm. Heck, at 114 mph in eighth, it’s turning just above 2400. This sort of low engine speeds are the root of the Charger’s 31-mpg highway rating from the EPA. In the city, the automobile is rated at 19 mpg. We averaged 20 above the course of our 1100 miles with the car.

2012 NAIAS: Hyundai Genesis Coupe

The new 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe gets tends to make its official public debut at Detroit Motor Display, featuring a lot more electrical power, new capabilities, and a heavily revised face.
The facelifted Genesis Coupe comes with new headlights inspired by its infant brother, the Veloster. It also gets the identical wide mouth we are now seeing on all the most recent Hyundai models, and the new signature grille. The rest of the vehicle remains pretty considerably the exact same as just before, only the tail lights now have a cooler graphic.
Alterations are far a lot more deep under the skin, where the amazing 3.eight liter V6 engine has been tuned to acquire 42 horsepower (a generous 14 % increase) and 29 lb.-ft of torque (an eleven % increase). That adds up to a total output of 348 hp and 295 lb.-ft. at 5,300 RPM on premium fuel. Hyundai says it’ll do to 60mph in about five seconds.

Despite the fact that the whole point of getting the Genesis Coupe is to get that V6 engine, Hyundai also offers a turbocharged, intercooled 2.-liter DOHC inline four-cylinder, now with 274 horsepower (a huge 30 percent increase) and 275 lb.-ft. of torque (an impressive 23 percent boost). It will a lot far more fuel effective than the V6, and also considerably slower.

Face-Lifted 2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe: 271-hp Four, 345-hp V6, Eight-Speed Auto
November 13, 2011 at 1:19pm by Justin Berkowitz

Hyundai revealed its updated Genesis coupe on Facebook last week, but the cosmetics are just sizzle. The new fascia looks, uh, new, but the red meat is under the sheetmetal. At a relatively small event in Korea today, the company confirmed big updates to both the four- and six-cylinder powertrains.
The base 2.0-liter turbocharged four, an uncharismatic, gruff engine that previously offered just 210 hp and 223 lb-ft, is now good for 271 hp and 275 lb-ft. The change comes by way of a larger intercooler and a new twin-scroll turbocharger.
More exciting, the optional 3.8-liter V-6 gets a shot of steroids. This engine uses direct injection—its now functionally the same engine as in the 2012 Genesis sedan—and boasts 345 hp and 295 lb-ft. (These are increases of 39 and 29, respectively, over the coupe’s outgoing V-6.) Hyundai also claims it’s addressed one of our many complaints about the Genesis coupe: the gruff, unpleasant cacophony of the six. “In order to raise the emotional quality in the Lambda 3.8 GDi model, a sound generator is applied to replace the rough engine sound with a classy and sporty sound.” It’s a little unusual for an automaker to be so candid about a shortcoming like this, but the acknowledgement good news and we’re eager to see whether the “sound generator” is a special exhaust baffle or a set of Infinity speakers.

Hyundai Genesis Hurricane SC For SEMA

This year at SEMA Show Hyundai will showcase a special edition prototype Genesis Coupe, called the Hurricane SC.
This extreme version of the Genesis Coupe is joint project between Hyundai America Technical Center Inc. (HATCI), Magnuson Products, Rhys Millen Racing, Harman International and Torvec Inc.
Almost every part of the car is modified, including power, traction, braking, exterior and interior design and audio system. The best part of it is a Magnuson supercharger with liquid to air intercooler for the 3.8 liter V6 engine, which increases the output to 450 hp.
“The supercharger creates a modest six to seven pounds of boost which generates a 35-45 percent increase in horsepower and torque and can be easily modified to deliver even higher boost levels,” said Terry Peddicord, director, sales, Magnuson Products. ”One of the many exciting aspects of this project is that the Genesis Hurricane SC is not just another pretty face for the show circuit, but rather it is a hard working lab-rat that will push the bounds of this car and the whole vehicle segment.”
