Skoda Celebrates its 15th Million Production Vehicle

Czech car maker and member of VW Group Skoda Auto is celebrating production of its 15th million vehicle. This remarkable milestone is marked with a new third-generation Skoda Octavia; a model that the biggest contributor to that number.
Skoda has been making cars since 1905, but it is in the past six years that they saw a dramatic growth. One third of the total 15 million vehicles rolled off the assembly lines in that period, with 1 million alone produced in 2012. By 2018 Skoda reckons they can produce and sell 1.5 million vehicles per year.
Octavia, the brand’s best-seller, accounts for about 44 percent of Skoda’s worldwide sales. Since its introduction in 1996, about 3.75 million Octavias have been delivered to customers.
Skoda recently boosted the capacity of the assembly line at the Mlada plant from 800 to 1,200 vehicles per day by installing a new body shop and a fully-automated paint shop for interior car body parts. They seem to be right on track to achieve their 2018 goals. The growing demand in the global markets such as China, Russia and India guarantees that.

Lada XRAY concept: Russia’s Evoque debuts in Moscow
Russian car maker AvtoVaz has taken the wraps off the striking Lada XRAY concept at the Moscow motor show.
The dramatic SUV concept was designed by AvtoVaz’s new design chief, Steve Mattin, who previously worked for Mercedes-Benz and Volvo where he oversaw the design of the second-generation M-Class and the XC60 concept car, among many production cars.

With hints of Range Rover Evoque, Kia Sportage and Citroen DS4 in its design, the Lada XRAY concept debuts the brand’s new ‘X’ front-end – incorporating the headlights, foglights, grille and lower air intake – that is set to become a feature of future Lada vehicles.
Lada says the first production models showcasing the new design language should hit Russian showrooms by 2015.

Moscow Auto Show Gains Status

Have international auto shows had their day?
There are many industry pundits who feel major auto shows have lost their luster in mature markets. It’s true that the formerly important major shows in countries like the UK, Italy and Japan have downsized or even disappeared. Manufacturers are looking for more cost effective ways to reach potential customers, such as local ride and drive events that are growing in popularity.

Mazda6
Still, in countries, such as China India and Russia, where the new car markets are rapidly expanding, major auto shows are growing in importance. That’s partly why Mazda chose to give the striking new Mazda6 its global premiere at the 2012 Moscow International Automobile Salon this week. Another factor in the decision being that Mazda is opening a new plant in Russia, just as its only one in the U.S. Closes its doors.

Land Rover LR2
Moscow was also where the new Land Rover LR2 (still known elsewhere as the Freelander 2) got it’s first public showing, as did the Bentley Continental GT and the freshened Audi R8.

Lada Joins Electric Car Ranks, But Is It A Leaf-Beater?…
Remember the Yugo? It was a small, cheap econobox, based on 1970s Fiat underpinnings and imported to the U.S. from its home country of Serbia.
They actually sold over 100,000 in the U.S. between 1985 and 1992, but the model is derided as slow, unreliable and thoroughly undesirable.
History of Mercedes

The three pointed star on any automobile or on a chain around the neck of a ghetto boy means only one thing, the owner has class, which is exactly the impression Daimler AG, owner of the Mercedes-Benz brand wants you to think and is why they have been accused of not making theft-proof badges for their cars.
Those who can afford to drive a Mercedes can also afford to replace the badge, and wearing the badge around the neck gives a form of street cred money can’t buy. There is a reason thieves don’t steal Lada badges. For a time in the 1980s some Mercedes-Benz dealerships in South Africa would replace the badge free of charge if it was stolen, enhancing the image of a company that cares about its customers and brand.

Most of the recent cars of course now sport a badge mounted flush with the hood making it more difficult to remove, aside from the fact Mercedes-Benz branded cars now cover a wider range of sizes and price points than the company is usually known for. Right from the very beginning of the company’s formation the vehicles produced have always been considered only suitable for those who could afford them, the cars have never been a competitor to Ford.
The last two decades of of the 19th century were a golden age for home inventors who were discovering ways to turn carriage wheels without the use of a horse, thankfully they did, and their ideas are the reason modern transport is so ubiquitous now.

Skoda MissionL Concept
SKODA will present a world-premier design concept called MissionL at this year’s Frankfurt International Motor Show. Close to the final production-ready design, this concept car reveals the look of SKODA’s upcoming model line that is to become symbolic of the Czech carmaker’s planned model offensive.
The new compact five-door vehicle will be launched in Europe, Russia and China. In line with the brand’s internationalisation principles, this compact ‘liftback’ will feature specific modifications in each of these regions. In addition, the Indian market will have its own version, a compact sedan. These steps are in line with the goals of SKODA’s 2018 growth strategy that was set last year in which the brand intends to increase its sales to 1.5 million vehicles by 2018.
“Revealing the look of our new compact model, the MissionL shows exactly the direction our brand is going to take,” says SKODA Board Chairman Prof. Dr. h.c. Winfried Vahland. “The world premiere in Frankfurt gives a clear signal that SKODA is going full steam ahead now. We are going to present a new vehicle every six months over the next two or three years.”
