Nissan announced today that it earned $ 6.27 billion for the fiscal year 2010, ending March 31, 2011 – that’s record-high levels for the Japanese automaker.

“The March 11 earthquake in Japan significantly disrupted our operations, but Nissan is once again proving its resilience in the face of adversity,” said Nissan President and CEO Carlos Ghosn. “We have repeatedly demonstrated our experience in recovering short-term performance while protecting strategic, long-term priorities. Although the effects of this tragedy continue to affect our operations, we are poised for a robust recovery.”

Nissan said that vehicle sales grew from 3.515 million to 4.185 million units. For the full year, overall global market share stood at 5.8%.

Lucky Number 7: BMW plays it safe with the new 7, and we win.

At 2:17 a.m. on June 6, 2010, an 800-yard-wide tornado packing winds of up to 135 mph ripped through the tiny hamlet of Dundee, Michigan. In its wake were damaged homes, uprooted trees, and utility poles scattered about like toothpicks. Amid all the windblown rubble surrounding the Dundee home of our copy chief, Cora Weber, sat our long-term BMW 750Li, amazingly unscathed and undisturbed. Fortune had finally smiled on the $ 119,080 luxury sedan. Previous spins of  Fortuna’s wheel hadn’t gone as well for this particular car. After all, it should have landed in the hands of a caring, wealthy owner instead of the greasy, disease-ridden mitts of  your humble C/D staff.

The last time we checked in with our long-term <link1>Subaru Legacy<link>, the car was dragging its feet a little (or maybe that was our staff dragging its feet), having taken nine months to accumulate only 23,212 miles. That pace continued until February, when we started to exercise the Subaru a little more. In the last three months, we’ve spun the Legacy’s odometer another 9000 miles toward our 40,000-mile endgame, with three trips to Wisconsin, one to New York, and a roughly 2000-mile looper out East to visit colleges in D.C., Baltimore, New York, Providence, and Boston.

Top 10 Most Stolen Cars of 2010: Honda Tops the List

b6a1203acordEX L 05 Top 10 Most Stolen Cars of 2010: Honda Tops the List

You meet the nicest people on a Honda… until they steal it. Honda owners should remember that the tagline only applies to motorcycles, as their cars were once again the most stolen and recovered vehicles of 2010 according to statistics released by LoJack security systems.

The Honda Accord and Civic, as well as the Toyota Camry, were the most stolen among the 10,649 total cars recovered by LoJack this year—just as they were in 2009. While this reflects the bestselling popularity among consumers, older Hondas have always been popular with thieves; mid-90s Accords, for example, and the Civic and Acura Integra are frequently targeted by nefarious enthusiasts so they can mod them.

But thieves are moving on up to newer and posher cars, just like their English brethren: one of the most stolen is the Cadillac Escalade, which is up there with the Nissan Maxima and Ram pickup. And the most popular areas for car thievery? SoCal, Texas, and Florida, where the populations are large and the car is a necessity. Click the jump to see the full list.

R.L. Polk: Automotive brand loyalty increased in 2010, GM and Ford top the list

Ford Focus – Chevrolet Cruze

Efforts by automakers to retain customers are paying off, according to an R.L. Polk & Co. study. The study found that nearly half of last year’s customers bought or leased a vehicle of the same brand they had before. Overall, Polk found that industry brand loyalty increased from 45.8 percent in 2009 to 47.9 percent in 2010, an increase of 4.6 percent.

“Historically we’ve just let loyalty happen and measure it on the back end,” said Brad Smith, director of Polk’s loyalty management practice. “What we’re seeing now is more manufacturers actively managing loyalty and trying to influence it.”

Ford tops all automotive brands in 2010 Polk loyalty study

Every year Polk releases a list of automotive loyalty rates for automakers based on extensive polling, intended to show the percentage of buyers who go back to a brand to purchase a second vehicles.

For 2010 the results may surprise some as change is in the air, Ford Motor Company managed to beat all manufacturers – even luxury – with the highest customer return rate of them all at 61.8 percent loyalty. Ford, as in just the vehicles wearing blue ovals on the front, also took top honors for any make, with a loyalty percentage of 60.8.

Next in line for manufacturer loyalty (not to be confused for individual brand loyalty) was General Motors at 59.9 percent, and Toyota ar 58.8 percent.

Other notables include Kia, which scored the largest loyalty percentage increase for any make with a jump of 5.9 percentage points in a single year, and Mercedes-Benz which brought home the highest score for a luxury brand of 56.7 percent. Very closely following Mercedes-Benz was Honda at 56.6 percent, followed then by Toyota at 56.4 percent, and Chevrolet rounded out the top five with 53 percent.

Also worth mentioning, but not for reasons Toyota will likely wish to share, the struggling Japanese automaker was the only brand out of the top five to see a decline in owner loyalty, with a four-tenths drop compared to last year.

What exactly do these results mean?
