Take a appear at these two lists – they are deemed to be the most substantial new vehicles by a panel of 66 journalists from close to the world. As one particular of nine US based mostly journalists I got to participate in this preliminary round of voting for the leading 10 autos in the two categories.

As usual there is a dearth of US cars, which is not surprising because few US made vehicles are sold overseas. Possessing mentioned that Chrysler models, this kind of as the Charger and SRT8 editions of numerous models, were on the original list of eligible cars but none created it to the Top Ten. Likewise the Ford Mustang Boss 302 was a casualty in the final list.

It’s also encouraging that there is only 1 vehicle – the Citroen DS5 — that will not be sold in the US. In most years there are a number of cars jurors pick that are not sold right here.

This indicates Chevrolet is the only US brand with vehicles that built it through the 1st round of votes. It’s a good omen for Chevrolet, which is rapidly gaining in recognition as a world-wide nameplate.

The 2012 World Vehicle of the Year will be chosen from the following best 10 automobiles listed in alphabetical order:

Making the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic sedan after the Sonic hatchback resulted in an sudden expansion for GM’s designers.

GM initially meant to make the subcompact sedan a bit longer then the hatchback to add extra trunk area. Ending up with a model 14.1 inches longer then the hatch, the Sonic now come close in length to the Chevrolet Cruze, which falls in the compact segment.

“We felt very good about the stability of the hatch. As we put the sedan with each other at the exact same time, the sedan just felt, from a proportional, standpoint stubby. Proportionally it didn’t experience appropriate,” says Ken Parkinson, executive director for GM layout and Chevrolet brand champion.

“So we decided to add a tiny bit far more on the rear length, pull the auto with each other once again and step back, and all of a sudden it felt genuinely great. We knew proportionally that was the right point to do.”

As the designers finished the style challenge, a new set of problems arose. Since the vehicle was drastically longer than expected, they had to be confident there had been no problems with manufacturing and engineering.

What GM ended up with is important trunk area in a properly-balanced, beautiful sedan, which barely remains stuffed into the subcompact segment.

Refresher: The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic is available in a sedan and hatchback variant. The standard engine on the 2012 Sonic is a 1.8L DOHC inline 4-cylinder unit creating 135-hp and 125 lb-ft of torque, even though an optional 138-hp 1.4L turbocharged inline 4-cylinder is also available. Prices commence at $ 14,495 for the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic LS Sedan($ 15,395 for the Chevrolet Sonic LS Hatchback), which is powered by a one.8L Ecotec creating 128-hp. Prices best out at $ 17,295 for the LTZ Sedan and $ 17,995 for the LTZ Hatchback. Costs commence at $ 14,495.

The Chevrolet Cruze, sold only as a sedan, brought in some successful product sales numbers for 2011, with 231,732 units sold. For this year, Chevy has made a decision to add a wagon variant for the Cruze that expected to improve product sales even increased.

Although GM is nevertheless finishing up with the wagon, it is rumored that the model will be numerous inches lengthier, with the addition of a sloping rear window and a tailgate.

Click here for a lot more news on the Chevrolet Cruze.

This is not the 1st variant that GM has produced for the Cruze, nevertheless. A 5-door hatchback is only available in markets outside the U.S., and even though GM hasn’t stated if they will be undertaking the exact same with the wagon, it may be a worthwhile move for the automaker to add it in the states. The Jetta Sport Wagon and Hyundai Elantra Touring are the only competitors the Cruze wagon would have in the states.

GM previously has confirmed its investment and a couple of particulars on the fifth-generation small-block V-8, and you can count on the new engine(s) powering these trucks. As we’ve talked about in our latest sightings of the C7 Corvette, the new little-block also will make its way into Chevy’s iconic sports activities auto historically, truck production volumes have supported the modest-block program, producing the Vette’s V-eight achievable. We know all Gen V tiny-blocks will characteristic aluminum blocks, direct injection—which in turn allows for a increased compression ratio—and a “new combustion method design” that has us intrigued. In addition to the new fuel-saving tech, we’re also expecting to see the continued use of cylinder deactivation

Furthermore, with the Ford F-150 bushwhacking a V-6–powered trail, we’re contemplating we’ll see wider use of a six-pot in the new Chevys and GMCs. At the extremely least, expect the prehistoric 4.3-liter V-6 that comes regular on base 1500 trucks to die, possibly getting replaced by GM’s ubiquitous 3.6-liter immediate-injected V-6. That engine at the moment generates up to an additional one hundred hp and an added 15 lb-ft of torque compared to the older, more substantial-displacement six. Remaining 4-speed automated transmissions should be swapped for six-speed units.

Dieting

With fuel-financial system enhancements a must, we hear the new trucks could drop as considerably as 500 pounds from their current curb weights. That appears extreme, and we’re hopeful it is genuine retaining a stout entire body-on-frame configuration signifies GM will have to appear to light-weight components this kind of as aluminum and plastics to aid in weight reduction. Swapping the remaining iron-block V-8s with the aforementioned all-aluminum engines will itself help trim a good deal of the extra fat.

New Interior, Similar Suspension

In the face of stiff competitors from the Ram 1500 and Ford F-150, the up coming GM twins will characteristic new interiors with what we can only imagine will be far better supplies (because cabin plastics can’t get considerably more plasticky than what’s in the present trucks). Rear-seat area, a main shortcoming with the latest models compared to the competition, must increase considerably based on the extended greenhouse seen in our images of the crew-cab model. Although we wait for some of the camo to drop for confirmation, you can count on the Chevy’s face to carry its signature bow tie bisected with a chrome bar and the GMC to feature an open-mouth design.

With the newest Ram moving to a expensive multilink coil-spring setup in the rear for a greater ride, one might think that Ford and GM would follow suit with their most current iterations. We hear that won’t be the situation for these two, as GM engineers really feel it is not warranted anticipate to find leaf springs supporting the subsequent Silverado and Sierra. These new workhorses must debut next year as 2014 models.
