BMW Gran Coupe concept green-lighted for production

BMW will inveterate that the Gran Coupe Concept will reach production. The design of the Audi A7-rival will be shared with the forthcoming 6 Series Coupe.
Speaking at an event in Munich, Klaus Draeger, an associate of BMW’s Board of Management, said that the GCC will become a 6-Series “four-door coupe”. He implied the car would launch in late 2012.

To be sold as the BMW 6-Series Gran Coupe, several engines and models will be offered: two petrols & diesels, a hybrid, and an M variant. So expect a 300bhp (304PS) 3.0 litre 6 cylinder (hybrids will have a 54bhp (55PS) electric motor), 400bhp (406PS) 4.4 litre V8 petrol, 3.0 litre diesel with 204bhp (207PS) and 245bhp (248 PS), and a twin-turbo V8 with 555bhp (563PS) to 570bhp (578PS).
Other than talking about the production GCC, Draeger mentioned BMW has designed and built a 6 Series Shooting Brake. It hasn’t been confirmed for production, but market evaluation studies are currently in progress.

Peugeot BB1 concept nearing to production

The Peugeot BB1 concept EV is nearing closer to production after Peugeot confirmed it had moved from concept car status to project status. That means the vehicle may launch in 2012/2013 and Peugeot design director, Gilles Vidal said he hopes the production BB1 will very much look like the concept car.
The vehicle’s official categorisation is being mooted. The BB1 has handle bars and a twist-grip accelerator and passengers sit pillion style behind the driver. Although, homologation for a quadricyle is complicated because different countries have different definitions of what a quadricyle is. For example, in France a quadricyle is not allowed on the motorway and the UK has two classes of quadricyle, depending on the vehicle’s weight and power.
Classifying the BB1 EV as a car could make homologation more direct.

Concept cars highlight Ford-only day of RM’s Monterey auction
Filed under: Concept Cars, Auctions, Ford

The RM auction is always one of our favorite events during the Monterey classic car week, and this year’s looks to be one of the best yet. In fact, there are so many vehicles up for grabs that RM has scheduled an additional auction day featuring just Fords. Some historically-important vehicles will cross the block, including a 1903 Ford Model A and a 1962 Lincoln Continental used by John F. Kennedy.
Ford Motor Company itself will auction off some vehicles itself, including eighteen concept cars built from 2000 to 2004. Among the notable vehicles on the list are the 2001 Lightning Rod Concept, the 2001 Forty Nine Concept, the 2003 Supercharged Thunderbird Concept and the 2004 Lincoln Mark X Concept. Our favorite? The Mustang GT-R Concept that made its debut at the 2004 New York Auto Show. Ford will donate the proceeds of the sale to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and The Children’s Center.
You can read more about the Ford-only auction day in the press release after the jump, or head over to RM’s website to see a full list of vehicles up for sale.

Citroen GT concept still under assessment

Citroen has denied previous reports alleging it no longer has any plans to put its wild GT by Citroen supercar into restricted production.
Citroen was likely to build 6 cars costing around £1.1m each, but French media claimed Citroen had scrapped plans after it decided the engineering and development costs needed to get the GT production ready would not be worth the returns on the car; each unit would be sold at a significant loss. However, Citroen has now verified that the GT by Citroen is still “under evaluation” for production and no choice on whether or not the supercar will make production has been decided.

Earlier reports suggested Citroen is planning to focus on developing smaller sporty cars, such as the Citroen DS3 Racing, rather than developing a range-topping supercar. The GT by Citroen’s engine has never been publicised, but it was believed to be powered by a V8 petrol engine producing more than 500bhp supplied by either Ford or GM. The production car is expected to use a manual gearbox with paddle shifters.
The Citroen GT concept stole the lime-light at the 2008 Paris motor show.
