It is straightforward to confuse weird with bad. The Mitsubishi i is weird. It appears like a pc mouse. It has windshield wipers that resemble Ultraman’s arms in assault mode. It is powered by a 66-hp electrical motor mounted under the rear seats. It carries onboard the vitality equivalent of significantly less than half a gallon of fuel. Its front tires look like compact spares. We could go on. But regardless of becoming weird, the i isn’t poor.

To make the tiny electric auto (known as i-MiEV in the Japanese market) slightly much more palatable to American tastes and to permit it to comply with our crash standards, Mitsubishi stretched the Japanese edition nearly eight inches and widened it by 4.3 inches. It is nevertheless tiny but now about the very same length as a Mini Cooper. The new body’s widened track makes it significantly less probably to be cow tipped. The radically cab-forward, vanlike shape makes it possible for four adults to sit within (some touching will be involved). A Nissan Leaf is greater within and out, but it starts at $ 36,050. The i opens at a pre–tax-credit cost of $ 29,975 sales began on the West Coast in November, and Mitsubishi plans to supply it nationwide by June. And just to get its new electric car off to a excellent start in the market, the organization will refer to it as the i, but the badge on the automobile will study “i-MiEV” because, nicely, Mitsubishi does not appear to have the slightest clue why.

In spite of its weirdness, driving the i is unexceptional. It is slow—0 to 60 requires 13. seconds—but there is nothing at all abnormal about how it operates. The electric energy steering, reportedly tuned by Lancer Evolution engineers, feels surprisingly alive.  An electrically powered, vacuum brake booster delivers a firm pedal. The i is reasonably light—2552 pounds—but stops from 70 mph in an unremarkable 183 feet, thanks in huge portion to its very low-rolling-resistance tires. The ride is smooth, the construction quiver-cost-free.

Graced with 145 pound-feet of  torque but cursed with only 66 horsepower, the 108-pound water-cooled electric motor spins by way of a single-gear transmission. Under 50 mph, the power—or lack thereof—is tolerable. When merging onto a freeway, you will want for at least 67 horses.

But much more energy would suck the electrons out of the 16-kWh lithium-ion battery even more quickly, and the i can go only 62 miles on a complete charge, according to the EPA. In the exact same EPA test, the Leaf returns a 73-mile assortment.

Mitsubishi says that the i totally depletes and charges its battery.  In the interest of battery life (deeply discharging and charging a lithium-ion unit has the possible to shorten its existence), many suppliers really don’t use each and every electron of capability. Chevy, for instance, employs only about 50 percent of the Volt’s battery possible. If  battery existence is retaining you up at evening, the i’s eight-year or 100,000-mile battery  warranty may well enable you to get some rest. Much less most likely to soothe is Mitsubishi’s estimate that the pack will have only 80 % of  its authentic capacity immediately after five years, 70 percent immediately after 10 years. This regardless of the fact that the battery gets much better treatment method than the driver. A cooling fan blows air onto the pack when charging temperatures rise, and a battery heater is accessible as an option for buyers in colder climates since temperature extremes also diminish the battery’s capacity above time. If the driver gets cold although operating the i, Mitsubishi suggests he buck up and use the common seat heater, which consumes less electricity than the cabin heater.

Recharging an empty  battery  takes about 22 hours using a 120-volt home outlet. Upgrade to the 240-volt “Level 2” unit that will be sold through Very best Purchase retailers, and the charging time falls to 7 hrs.

If a variety of 62 miles operates for your life and you want an electric automobile, the i delivers. Its weirdness even helps make it interesting, or as fascinating as a 2552-pound auto with 66 horsepower can be.

DEARBORN, Michigan — Best speed is Ok … if you are a racecar. If you’re an electrical car, the speed that is a lot more important is charging time. In this regard, the new 2012 Ford Focus Electric has some bragging rights.
Amongst the many technologies integrated in this EV is a new and rapid on-board charger. “The best in the industry,” says Steve Ross, whose official title is Merchandise Advertising Manager, Sustainability and Electrification, Ford of Canada. (His unofficial title is Advertising Guy For Something With a Battery.)

Ford claims the six.six kW charger on the Ford Concentrate Electric requires only a few to 4 hrs to charge a fully depleted battery when hooked up to a 240V, 32-amp charging station. By way of comparison, the Nissan LEAF has a 3.3 kW charger and will take about 6 to eight hrs to obtain a complete charge from a 240V supply.

According to Ross, this quicker charging rate is a strategic component of Ford’s electric autos, and a single that will ultimately give owners of its EV significantly less to be concerned about when it comes to variety nervousness, as when they are ready to charge during the day, either at home or at a station along their route, they will be able to get more juice in a shorter quantity of time, to drastically extend the kilometres they have at their disposal on any given day.

The Ford Concentrate Electric’s variety on a full charge is 260 km.

WAYNE, Michigan — In an era significantly less concerned about fossil fuel consumption, this vast factory was acknowledged as the Michigan Truck plant. It built Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators, even though additional back in its history, in the fifties and sixties, it developed Ford’s yacht-like station wagons.
Now it is referred to as the Michigan Assembly Plant, and it’s all about staying present day and green. Ford just invested $ 500 million so it could make the 2012 Ford Concentrate and some its variants, and do so in a extremely green way.

Concentrate production started out in the spring of 2011. In November, it started to generate the 2012 Ford Focus Electric, right on the very same line as the gas-driven Concentrate models.

Electrical Production
&#13
“When the C-MAX Hybrid and C-MAX Energi go into creation here, we will be the first plant in the planet to have (such) an integrated develop,” stated John Fleming, Ford’s Executive Vice President, International Manufacturing. “The plant will be responsible for putting in five different powertrains – two diverse gas engines, a hybrid, a plug-in hybrid, and a battery electrical – all on the same line.”

The condition neatly illustrates Ford’s electrical technique –electrify a platform, not a single model, and make gasoline and electric designs related enough that they can share several elements and manufacturing processes. It also tends to make sense from a sales standpoint. If electric vehicles are hard sells, plant production can easily to switch to other designs.

“Each station is ready to accept any kind of car that comes their way,” notes Fleming. “Because we are electrifying platforms and not one-off specialty automobiles, we can manage to assemble the automobiles affordably, and with the same good quality measures as the traditional fuel models rolling down the exact same line.”

Body development has traditionally been the assembly task that hinders and/or limits a plant’s flexibility. In the previous, every single certain entire body part required a precise set of tooling, so each body element could be found, clamped and welded. The plant’s state-of-the-art tooling methods can be programmed for each automobile coming down the line, eliminating the want for model-specific tooling and/or downtime for tooling changeover. The use of this tooling makes this plant the most flexible, higher-volume facility in the Ford loved ones.

Fisker Karma is a higher overall performance electric vehicle, which is on nationwide tour and one particular of its stops was at 2012 Consumer Electronics Display. We got an opportunity to sit within and expertise all its luxury appointments, each exterior and interior. The cabin inside is rather spacious and delivers abundance of legroom, even though the swank leather interior is created of very low carbon leather, which was created in greatest achievable way. The solar panels on roof do far more than the solar panels of Toyota Prius and are employed to run a fan for keeping the car’s interior cool, as it sits in parking lots. It delivers 50 mile range with single electrical charge. Sadly, it has bit problems with batteries and 50 designs had been recalled in December 2011, which presented possible fire hazard.

LOS ANGELES, California – I happened to stumble upon a curious sight at the recent L.A. auto show – a car so small, it was unloaded by forklift truck. What I could see of its rotund backside is that it sported X-shaped taillights, looking disconcertingly like the eyes of deceased cartoon characters.
Curious, I decided to investigate – was it a design school exercise? Another odd little Japanese electric concept?

Neither. The Doking XD prototype, strangely enough, is the product of a Croatian company that, for 20 years, has designed and built heavy machinery and robotic equipment for both the mining and firefighting industries. Tiny, at only 2.85 metres long, the XD boasts luxury, compact city driving and unbelievable acceleration in one miniscule package.

The XD is the brainchild of Doking CEO Vjekoslave Majetic, fulfilling a childhood dream of a luxurious city car that can do double-duty on the race track.

Huh? How does what looks like the mutant run offspring of a smart fortwo qualify as anything resembling a race car? Well, it’s available in two models; one, your average modest city car, the other a potent sleeper.

Thanks to four 45-kW electric motors, one at each wheel, the all-electric XD4 can blast from 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and boasts a 220-km range. With all four motors engaged, output is 220 hp and a staggering 532 lb-ft of torque. The XD4 can function as a front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or AWD car depending on the driver’s whim.

The more modest XD2 has a slight range advantage at 250 km and weighs 1,200 kg. It has a maximum speed of 140 km/h and reaches 100 from 0 in 7.5 seconds.

Power is stored in a 33-kWh lithium-ion phosphate battery system that’s produced in-house. Sandwiched between the floor, the 320-kg battery pack adds stability to the overall handling.

The tiny XD boasts an odd but riveting design. First, the scissor doors open skyward, Lamborghini-style. Its unique layout features the driver in the centre and, quite surprisingly, accommodates two passengers in the back. Not only does this enhance the XD’s image as a sporty race machine, according to Majetic, the middle seat is the safest place for the driver to be.

Despite the fact that you may possibly not be seeing many on the road as of nevertheless, there are far far more electrical autos coming our way than you may think about.

What is specifically fascinating about EVs, other than the simple fact that they do not generate any emissions, is that they will come in all shapes, sizes, and vocations. We’ve driven some that’ll hit 100 km/h in less time than it requires you to study this sentence. We’ve spent time behind the wheel of vehicles that will be as green as they will be utilitarian. One factor is particular: all will be completely viable in an urban setting.

In the last two years alone, Auto123.com has tested and evaluated far more than a dozen of these vehicles like some test mules. We have also taken a couple of funky hybrids that are really worth mentioning for a drive. A lot of of these cars are not however on the road anywhere and are still in experimental stages or are available only in limited test fleets in, exactly where else, California.

So, if you’re into alternative implies of determination, the following autos will interest you. We know that we’re really excited at the prospect of far more of these autos hitting our roads in the extremely close to future and you must be as nicely.

Here’s a recap.

Ford of Canada announced its new electrical automobile, the 2012 Ford Concentrate Electrical, will have a sticker value of $ 41,199 prior to destination and delivery charges ($ 1,500) as nicely as applicable taxes.
There is only the one particular trim degree and only three options: leather seating with 6-way energy seat for $ one,000 a cargo management system for $ 125 and tri-coat paint for $ 300 (in either White Platinum Metallic or Blue Candy Tinted Metallic).

Common devices consists of unique 17-inch wheels, a 60/40-split rear bench and a large-end audio technique. Ford mentioned a similarly equipped 5-door hatch, with automatic transmission, would retail for about $ 30,000.

Also incorporated in the purchase price tag is a five-year subscription to the MyFord Mobile app, which permits owners to remotely control charging, discover charging stations as well as keep track of numerous aspects of the vehicle’s operation and state of charge. Not integrated in the price tag is a residence charging station.

The company also announced that starting up December 15, 2011, guests to the Ford.ca internet site will be able to register themselves as “hand raisers” — likely Ford Concentrate Electrical clients who would like Ford to contact them with much more details about the vehicle and its availability.

US consumers in the California and New York/New Jersey markets were ready to location orders for Focus Electric in November, and only by means of particular Certified Electrical Car Dealers.

In calendar year 2012, Ford Concentrate Electric will broaden to one more 15 launch markets, as production ramps up at the Michigan assembly plant, which can make each gas and electric versions of the Focus. Canadian-market place Focus Electrical designs will be obtainable “sometime in the spring.”

Unlike the US, exactly where Ford Concentrate Electrical will be very first deployed in pick, urban markets, Ford of Canada is inviting all its dealers to apply for EV revenue and service status.

Potential customers in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia could take advantage of provincial rebates for electrical automobiles. Simply because of its significant battery size, the Ford Concentrate Electric is eligible for the maximum rebate quantities in all these jurisdictions ($ 8,500 in Ontario, $ eight,000 in Quebec, and $ five,000 in B.C.).

The following BMW M3, due in about two years as a 2014 model, will most likely be propelled by an inline-six delivering a lot more energy than today’s 414-hp, 4.-liter V-8. To overcome the loss of two cylinders and a liter or so of displacement, BMW will surely exploit turbocharging—as it has done throughout its lineup—to increase mileage without forfeiting overall performance.

What’s unusual is the amount of boosters planned for the long term M3. The rumor mill says 3: two traditional turbochargers plus a single spun by an electrical motor in lieu of exhaust gas.

This only seems odd till you consider the rising popularity of electrical power as a path to effectiveness. In addition to employing kilowatts to drive wheels some or all of the time, inventive automakers are progressively weaning ancillary equipment—power-steering gears, AC compressors, water pumps—off petroleum, shifting them to electric-motor drive.

BMW’s EfficientDynamics technique relies on the recycling of commonly wasted power, utilizing electrical energy as the medium. The alternator is programmed to charge the battery largely during deceleration. This relieves the engine of the charging load, which, in conjunction with added electrically driven accessories, yields a worthwhile mileage improvement.

More proof of BMW’s enthusiasm for electricity is an experimental thermoelectric generator shown at last fall’s Frankfurt auto show. This gadget employs semiconductor supplies to convert waste-exhaust heat directly into electrical energy, which is also stored in the battery.

The beauty of a 3rd, motor-driven blower is its potentially fast response. Lag is caused by the delay amongst the cracking of the throttle and the arrival of adequate exhaust power to spin the turbo(s). The electrically driven compressor shown under reaches its 70,000-rpm maximum operating speed in only a third of a 2nd, according to its maker, U.K.-based Managed Power Technologies.

BMW’s electric supercharger would serve as a first responder to give forced-induction air as the throttle is depressed.

In a 2nd or two, following the exhaust-gas power and volume are sufficient, the electrical blower would pass the pressurization baton to the two conventional turbochargers.

Hence far, BMW has confirmed only that the subsequent M3 is due here in about two many years. So don’t be amazed if this page’s speculation turns out to be just hot air.

Mitsubishi has achieved decent quantities of success with the i-MiEV electric vehicle in its house land, and also in Europe, exactly where this model is also sold badged as a Peugeot iOn. Subsequent month, the i-MiEV will be going on sale in America (called just the “i” in our market place), which will no doubt increase sales numbers of this revolutionary commuter vehicle. Not ones to rest on their laurels, Mitsubishi has announced an ambitious plan to electrify themselves, by producing eight electric-vehicles by 2016. These will include plug-in hybrids and total electric cars. Part of this new strategy is to generate little SUV’s and light trucks which will attract farmers, contractors, and others who use light trucks as component of their perform. Mitsubishi is well below way with this new project, and expects to place its electrical truck on sale globally by April 2013.
