The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee will hold a formal hearing to talk about and to investigate the possible fire hazards connected with the extensively broken Chevrolet Volts. Darrell Issa, R-CA, chairman of the committee, informed members of the Residence that the hearing—titled “Volt Vehicle Fire: What did NHTSA know and when did they know it?”—will be held on January 25.

National Highway Visitors Safety Administrator David Strickland claims that the White Home was informed of the first crash-check related Chevy Volt fire in September, 2011. White House officials say they did not request that the NHTSA maintain the details below wraps, but it wasn’t until finally Bloomberg News broke the story in November when the NHTSA decided to publicly disclose its findings.

In late November, the NHTSA opened a formal defect investigation in the Chevy Volt. In January, General Motors detailed modifications created to avoid the Volt from catching fire following a extreme influence.

Republicans have, time and once more, asked Standard Motors and the NHTSA to answer concerns concerning the delayed disclosure of feasible fires in crash-tested Volts. Ali Ahmad, a spokesman for Issa, stated last Friday that the Residence Oversight and Government Reform Committee will demand that the NHTSA turn more than all records related to the safety of the Volt:

“NHTSA has stalled on responding to the committee’s inquiry for 6 weeks and inexplicably refused to provide any documents. The committee expects complete compliance with its request and will consider compulsory strategies if NHTSA does not instantly modify its place.”

Standard Motors CEO Dan Akerson has agreed to provide his initial testimony before Congress since taking over the company, and will be joined by NHTSA administrator Strickland.

Standard Motors has been acknowledged to be one of the several leaders in automobile innovation and technologies. Such examples incorporate the brand’s hybrid technology, a broad range of advanced engine technologies and vehicles like the Chevrolet Volt.

And to cap a 43-year long career, Mr. Stephens announced that he will be stepping down from his position on April 1st, later this year—this is most probably not an April Fool’s joke.

“Tom Stephens is an engineering icon inside of our firm and inside of our business,” mentioned GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson. “We have all benefited drastically from his passion, wisdom, and dedication to item excellence. His talent and contributions to GM are deeply appreciated and his experience will be missed.”

Stephens held positions at Cadillac, Buick, Oldsmobile, and several other folks prior to his last and final place as Chief Technology Officer, leading departments this kind of as GM’s newly created GM Powertrain Division. And in the course of people instances, Stephens assisted develop the 1st ever Cadillac Northstar engine, develop almost all of GM’s sophisticated engine technologies nowadays this kind of as Displacement-On-Demand or “Active Fuel Management,” and GM’s plug-in hybrid powertrain, like in the Volt.

Buick had announced a couple of weeks back that it was about to come out with its latest little crossover at the car display in Detroit. The firm also released the picture of the headlight of this 2013 Encore. Following this announcement, Buick has been engaged in a teaser-image game and has been revealing section wise pictures of the automobile on Facebook. Quite lately, however, the auto maker has finally come out with adequate proof about the vehicle. The firm has released three unimaginatively developed puzzle pieces that fully reveals what the vehicle appears like.

The twin-row Encore is going to be drastically smaller sized than the 3-row Buick Enclave and therefore the auto looks equivalent to a squeezed version of this bigger and a lot more elegant vehicle. The 2013 Encore is going to be even smaller sized than the GMC Terrain twin autos as nicely as the Chevrolet Equinox from General Motors. The smallest supplying from Buick will be sharing a frequent platform with the Chevrolet Sonic. The automobile is anticipated to be fully unveiled at the motor display in Detroit starting following week. The full specification of this smallest crossover utility automobile from Buick is going to be offered to the readers then.

In truth, we also knew something else, the two contenders to the throne: BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

What we didn’t know up till Thursday is which of two brands was going to win, given that the two were caught in a neck-to-neck sales race. Going into December the gap was so little – less than one,600 vehicles- that the win could go either way.

In the end, the two German carmakers elevated their 2011 sales by 13 percent compared to 2010, but the winner was BMW, which sold 247,907 units, leaving Mercedes-Benz in 2nd location since with 245,231 revenue. According to Edmunds.com, BMW raised its incentives by more than US$ 200 per automobile in December, whilst Mercedes’ incentives remained flat.

Lexus saw its revenue fall by 13.four %, to 198,552 vehicles, which relegated Toyota’s luxury brand to 3rd place. Nonetheless, on Wednesday, company officials estimated that Lexus’ sales in the U.S. will rise by more than twenty percent this year, putting it back in the race for the best spot.

The two other Japanese luxury brand names, Honda’s Acura and Nissan’s Infiniti, also suffered from provide difficulties and the strong yen, recording an 8 and 4.8 % drop which placed them in sixth and eighth location respectively.

General Motors carried out fairly effectively, with Buick finishing fourth with a 14.3 % increase to 177,633 units, and Cadillac appropriate behind with a development of 3.7 percent and sales of 152,389 units.

Even though Audi managed to increase its revenue by 16 percent, it couldn’t manage anything far better than seventh spot and 117,561 units, significantly less than half of its top compatriots.

The U.S. luxury segment top rated ten is rounded off by Lincoln with 85,643 units that volume to essentially flat revenue, and Volvo which, despite ending final with just 67,240 revenue, recorded a 25 percent boost compared to 2010.

General Motors’ German division appears set to venture off-road with a high-riding, rough-and-prepared version of its Insignia Sports Tourer, dubbed the Opel Insignia CrossFour.

Spanish web site Motor.Terra posted these images and claims they are official, even though Opel is nevertheless to supply confirmation. CarAdvice has contacted Opel Australia about the images. We will update the story when we hear far more.

The Insignia CrossFour in the images is styled in the mould of the Subaru Outback, as effectively as its compatriots like the Audi A4 Allroad and the Volkswagen Passat Alltrack, which are each coming to Australia in 2012.

The CrossFour sports rugged-searching grey plastic reduce panels and metallic front and rear skid pads. Fitted normal with all-wheel drive, the Insignia CrossTour also reportedly attributes height-adjustable suspension, a rear locking differential and Opel’s FlexRide adaptive stability engineering.

International reports recommend the Insignia CrossFour will be provided with two engine choices: a 118kW CDTi diesel and a 143kW bi-turbo petrol, both with commence-quit technological innovation to minimize fuel consumption and emissions.

There is no confirmation at this stage, but rumours propose the Opel Insignia CrossFour could be in line for a 2012 Geneva motor show debut in March. Keep tuned.
