And the Best-Selling Premium Brand in the U.S. for 2011 is…

The one particular issue we knew for confident right after the manufacturing disruptions in Japan caused by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami was that Lexus wasn’t going to top rated the premium segment in the U.S. market for the initial time in a decade. In truth, we also knew something else, the two contenders to the throne: BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
What we didn’t know up till Thursday is which of two brands was going to win, given that the two were caught in a neck-to-neck sales race. Going into December the gap was so little – less than one,600 vehicles- that the win could go either way.
In the end, the two German carmakers elevated their 2011 sales by 13 percent compared to 2010, but the winner was BMW, which sold 247,907 units, leaving Mercedes-Benz in 2nd location since with 245,231 revenue. According to Edmunds.com, BMW raised its incentives by more than US$ 200 per automobile in December, whilst Mercedes’ incentives remained flat.
Lexus saw its revenue fall by 13.four %, to 198,552 vehicles, which relegated Toyota’s luxury brand to 3rd place. Nonetheless, on Wednesday, company officials estimated that Lexus’ sales in the U.S. will rise by more than twenty percent this year, putting it back in the race for the best spot.
The two other Japanese luxury brand names, Honda’s Acura and Nissan’s Infiniti, also suffered from provide difficulties and the strong yen, recording an 8 and 4.8 % drop which placed them in sixth and eighth location respectively.

Fisker Batteries May Have Safety Issue Says Supplier

In a very ironic story, battery maker A123 Methods Inc. has admitted to a potential security issue in batteries it supplies to Fisker Automotive. What’s the irony in that? Nicely, General Motors, which is presently dealing with a fire security problem of their own with their Chevy Volt, will be turning to A123 Systems’ batteries for their upcoming plug-in electrical Spark rather than continuing to use their present Volt supplier, South Korea’s LG Chem.
A123 is reporting that the batteries supplied to Fisker had misaligned hose clamps, element of the internal cooling method, that can trigger coolant to leak. The coolant leak could lead to a likely electrical brief circuit. A123 also did express that only about 50 vehicles are impacted by this and fixes are already underway.
Though not as poor as a prospective fire hazard, GM’s Volt problem is also being centralized close to a coolant leak that causes the fires soon after the battery has been severely broken.

General Motors to build 60,000 Volts in 2012
General Motors is planning to construct at least 60,000 Volts in 2012, as it measures up its campaign to grow to be a key player in the electric-automobile marketplace.

Although the Chevrolet Volt is technically not totally an electric auto (since it carries a modest petrol engine that acts like a generator and recharges the battery), GM is hoping to catch revenue of Nissan’s total-electrical LEAF which has discovered a lot more than 20,000 customers currently.
While Nissan plans to create 250,000 electrical-autos per year by 2016, GM is expecting that 10 percent of its sales will be powered by alternative fuel technologies come 2020.
Mr Akerson, who has previously labelled the Toyota Prius a “geek-mobile” and complained about GM’s bureaucracy, has been at the helm of GM for 15 months in which time the company has regained market place share throughout the world and initiated work on a wide variety of new tasks.

Saab Files for Bankruptcy
Saab is officially bankrupt, Parent company Swedish Automobile announced right now. The firm has been in difficulty given that April, when it ran out of money, couldn’t pay its suppliers and had to quit creating vehicles. Nonetheless, after eight months of negotiations it looked as if Saab was going to be saved after a sale was agreed with Chinese manufacturer Youngman and distributor Pang Da. Sadly that quite deal fell through, triggering the bankruptcy. The deal was mainly referred to as off due to General Motor’s refusal to have their patterns and technological innovation used by the Chinese. General Motors spokesman Jim Cain told Automotive News that Saab had not been ready to reassure GM that its technologies would be secure in the sale to the Chinese.
A brief explanation: General Motors when owned Saab, but put it up for sale in 2009 when GM itself was in monetary trouble. By that time Saab had developed the new 9-5 and 9-4X using largely GM components in their underbodies, suspensions, powertrains, and electronics. Then In early 2010, Saab was purchased from GM by Victor Muller’s investment firm, which also owned small supercar maker Spyker. However, when Muller agreed on the sale to the Chinese, GM then made a decision it wouldn’t let its models go to China. GM feel that copyright protection is as well weak in China and its technologies would be pirated. This poses a massive threat to GM as they manufacturer other cars using the same methods – the Insignia, Astra, new Zafira and their US and Chinese equivalents.

With bankruptcy, Muller has said he will not get any money out of Saab. Creditors will scrap above the remaining value left from the company’s tools, equipment and premises and they will not get a lot nor will its employees.
