Lotus and Fagor Ederlan Group to produce range-extender engine

Filed under: EV/Plug-in, Hybrid, Lotus, Geneva Motor Show

Lotus Engineering has reached an agreement with the Spanish Fagor Ederlan Group to develop and produce a small engine for use as a range extender in electric vehicles – a system similar to that found in the Chevrolet Volt. Lotus first showed its 1.2-liter inline-three engine at the Geneva Motor Show in the Evora 414E and Proton Emas concepts.

Both cars used a similar series hybrid powertrain architecture, where an electric motor provides the drive torque and the engine only drives a generator to sustain the battery after the plug-in charge has been depleted.

Because this new engine is designed specifically for use as a range extender rather than a primary power source, Lotus has been able to optimize the efficiency and reduce the weight. An adapted off-the-shelf engine like the one in the Volt is still designed to hold accessories like the alternator, air-conditioning compressor and power steering pump. Lotus has left out these structures for a lower cost and mass.

Lotus and Fagor Ederlan will take the 47 horsepower engine to production and offer it up to any automaker that wants to build an extended range electric vehicle, but no production timing or customers have been announced yet.

Report: Toyota Prius “Alpha” MPV coming in spring 2011

Toyota Hybrid-X concept – Click above for high-res image gallery

When Toyota gets around to launching additional body styles to the Prius lineup next year, the first model – a compact MPV – is expected to be badged as Alpha. The small van based on stretched version of the current Prius will add a third row of seats and should be the first production Toyota hybrid with a lithium ion battery pack. Toyota is currently testing a fleet of plug-in Priuses with lithium batteries, but those won’t be going into production until 2012.

The seven-seat Alpha is expected to be about one foot longer than the current Prius hatchback. A shorter, five-seat version of the Alpha that may look similar to the Hybrid-X concept from 2007 is expected to retain the nickel-metal hydride batteries of the current Prius to keep costs down. The Prius Alpha is expected to launch in March 2011

CAR takes a hack at rendering Muller’s Saab 9-2 drawing for themselves

Filed under: Spy Photos, Sedan, Geneva Motor Show, Europe, Saab, Design/Style, Luxury

With word that Saab wants to do battle with Mini in the quirky compact segment, the web has exploded with renderings of what the tiny Swedish machine could look like. CAR is the latest publication to try its hand at imagining the face of a new-world 9-2, and has been so kind as to share its take with the rest of the world. Supposedly, Spyker CEO Victor Muller gave the CAR artists a peek at his own hand drawing of how he envisions the little sedan. The publication’s team of rendering gurus took things from there.

We can’t say we’re exactly smitten with what the artists came up with. There’s plenty of Bentley in that nose, sure, but it doesn’t quite fit on a car the size of one’s slippers. The good news is, Saab has plenty of time to turn the design into something mouth watering. While Muller made waves at this year’s Geneva Motor Show by saying he would like to bring the 9-2 back from the grave, it’s going to be a long hard road before the Swedish automaker is introducing any models that are new from the ground up.

We’ll keep our ears to the rails, though, just in case the company happens to pull a miracle out of thin air and surprise us all.
