Report: Jaguar and Land Rover will not be attending 2012 Detroit Auto Show

Opting to focus its efforts on India’s New Delhi Auto Expo, Jaguar and Land Rover have made the decision to skip out on this year’s Detroit Auto Show.
“Jaguar Land Rover recognizes the Detroit Show is a world class exhibition, but for 2012 we will not exhibit there,” says Stuart Schorr, JLR’s Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs. “This decision was driven by the fact that since our newest concept vehicles were featured at the Frankfurt show and will be featured at the upcoming Los Angeles Show, we decided to show them next in the Delhi Show in January as part of our effort to build our brands in this growing market. Therefore, without anything new to show in Detroit this year, we felt it most efficient to not participate in the show.”
Since India’s Tata Motors has acquired Jaguar Land Rover, it seems practical that the brand focus its efforts on the expanding Indian market. Currently, there is not word on the company’s plans for the 2013 show.

India F1 Track Showcases Rich Future, Poor Present
This week’s Indian Grand Prix will be a celebration for one of the world’s fastest growing economies. The state-of-the-art, $ 400-million Buddh International Circuit is just the latest high-dollar effort intended to showcase India’s rapidly growing place on the world stage.
Yet as the world’s rich and famous pay upwards of $ 22,000 for a corporate box at the race, this extravagant new India stands in stark contrast to the old India that was bulldozed to make way for the track. It’s an old, but still very real India where upwards of 450 million don’t have access to a toilet.
OK, I won’t get all Sally Struthers here. Having a whole heap of rich people on hand dumping money into your economy is obviously no bad thing. The bigger issue is how the local governments acquired the land for the Circuit.
The Los Angeles Times tells the story in India’s new Grand Prix track collides with tradition. It’s an interesting read.
Rolls Royce set to enter South America soon
British luxury car maker, Rolls Royce is all set to enter the South American car market after having made their presence felt in Asia with China, Russia and India. Just like the other markets where imports of Rolls Royce cars used to happen far before Rolls Royce was even present in those markets, similarly, even South America has got a vast percentage of customers having Rolls Royce cars. This actually makes it easy for the British company to find their bearings in here.
Rolls Royce CEO, Torsten Muller is currently in the process of fixing up meetings with the local media, probable customers as also potential dealers in Chile and Brazil. Already two dealers have been finalized and they are Chile: Williamson Balfour Motors and for Brazil, Italia Group. As of now, delivery dates haven’t been finalized yet but it is expected that Rolls would start rolling out their cars here by the end of the year. Not only this, Rolls Royce currently have their plates full with the quota of vehicles allotted to the South American market already taken up.

Hyundai releases all-new city car for India called Eon

Hyundai is hard at work to keep up with the competition. And as a result, the South Korean brand has just unveiled its important new Eon city car for the Indian market. Known as the Eon, the model serves as Hyundai’s smallest model and was designed specifically for India, where it has its sites set directly on the Maruti-Suzuki Alto, which is the best-selling car in the country.
Designed by Hyundai’s Namyang R&D department in South Korea, the Eon is just slightly more compact than the i10 hatchback.
Power is supplied by a 0.8L three-cylinder gas engine that’s mated to a five-speed manual that drives the front wheels. The three-banger is good for 56hp and 52 lb-ft of torque and roughly 49.7 mpg on the US cycle.
Buyers in India have the option for six trim levels with prices starting at just 269,999 rupees or $ 5,515 with the top-of-the-line model maxing out at 371,869 rupees or $ 7,595.

Hyundai Launches New Eon Low-Cost City Car in India to Compete with Suzuki

The game is on for Hyundai in India as the South Korean automaker launched its all-important new Eon city car on Thursday. The five-door hatchback is Hyundai’s smallest model and it will be built and marketed in India where it will go up against the best-selling vehicle in the country, the Maruti-Suzuki Alto.
At 3,495mm long, 1,500mm tall, 1,550mm wide, and with wheelbase length of 2,380mm, the Eon is slightly more compact than the i10 hatchback (3,585mm long).
It was designed at Hyundai’s Namyang R&D center in South Korea and features the latest interpretation of the company’s ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ styling language.
The five-seat model is motivated by a 0.8-liter three-cylinder petrol engine rated at 56HP and 74.5Nm that returns an average fuel consumption of 21.1km/lt (49.7mpg US or 4.7lt/100km). A standard five-speed manual gearbox transfers power to the front wheels.
Buyers in India can choose from six trim levels with prices at New Delhi showrooms ranging from 269,999 rupees (US$ 5,515) for the base model to 371,869 rupees (US$ 7,595) for a top-of-the-line variant.
Red Bull Racing Drives F1 Car at 18,380 Feet in India
![]()
First they go and drive their F1 car on an unpaved section of Texas and now Red Bull Racing have taken to the hills to drive their Formula One car on the world’s highest mountain road: The Khardung-La Pass in India.
The stunt “makes Red bull Racing the first Formula One team to have ever managed to transport, fire-up and drive an F1 car on what is arguably the most challenging driving terrain in the world,” read the press release. Head of the Red Bull brand Anthony Ward said, “It is a testament to the engineering crew of Red bull Racing that we have been able to get a Formula One car running from 11,000 feet all the way up to the 18,380 feet mark. Logistically too, this project demonstrates Red Bull Racing’s commitment to continually pushing boundaries.”
There was no video available for this event (though knowing Red Bull, one is on the way), so after the jump and after the photos of this event, I’ve included Sebastien Buemi driving the Red Bull car on Ice in Canada. That stunt was part of the “Red Bull Speed Street” projects that also include Tom Cruise driving around Willow the aforementioned Texas thing and more…
