In the next step towards its bold goal of increasing Skoda’s worldwide sales to at least 1.5 million vehicles per year by 2018, the Volkswagen Group revealed a new entry-level Skoda sedan named Rapid at its Pune plant in western India on Sunday.
Although it had been suggested that the Rapide may be the production version of Skoda’s MissionL concept that was show in Frankfurt last month, this doesn’t seem to be the case.
Instead, the Rapid, which borrows its name from the rear-engine Skoda coupe of the mid-late 1980s, is a rebadged version of the Indian market VW Vento, otherwise known as the Polo sedan.
Positioned between the Fabia and Laura/Octavia, the new five-seat Rapid has a length of 4.39 meters, a width of 1.70 meters, and a height of 1.47 meters, while offering a trunk volume of close to 500 liters.
Production of the Rapid for the Indian market began on Sunday, but sales won’t start before the end of the year. When it reaches showrooms, the Rapid will offer buyers a choice of two 1.6-liter engines, a petrol and a turbo diesel unit, both producing 77kW (103HP).

Ford Fiesta Arrives in India

Any new car can’t be known as international if it doesn’t have a presence in India, a single of the world’s fastest increasing automotive markets. With Ford touting the worldly credentials of its latest Fiesta, it was only a matter of time ahead of the American automaker brought the subcompact to this nation of much more than 1 billion inhabitants.
The Indian industry Fiesta will be offered in sedan format, and in four trim levels: Style, Trend, Titanium and Titanium Plus. Customers will have a selection of gasoline and diesel-powered 1.five-liter 4-cylinder engines, although the only transmission offered will be a five-speed manual. The Fiesta enters a hotly contested small automobile market place, at the moment dominated by Maruti-Suzuki. Hyundai and India’s own Tata Motors are also important players in the segment.
Roughly 20 years ago the Indian auto market was restricted to a handful of outdated offerings, such as the Hindustan Ambassador and Padmini Premier. Even though the market nevertheless spots an emphasis on value and economic system, today’s Indian auto buyer is as demanding and tech savvy as any close to the planet. Fittingly, Ford has outfitted the Fiesta with characteristics such as Bluetooth and voice-activated controls.
“While adding dynamism and diversity to our showrooms across the country, this premium and engaging sedan brings in Ford’s global essence to the Indian market place,” mentioned Nigel Wark, executive director of advertising and marketing, sales and service at Ford India. The Fiesta will be constructed at Ford’s plant in Chennai, the sixth manufacturing facility to construct the subcompact sedan and hatchback.

By Jeff Cobb
Beat Electrical in Delhi India June 23.
Experimental electric car conversions final year by Basic Motors in Korea, Germany and as of last week in India, have some asking yourself when the business will develop a pure battery electrical to compete against the likes of the Nissan LEAF and pending Ford Focus EV.
On Thursday June 23, GM started displaying and testing an all-electrical edition of its Chevrolet Beat minicar in New Delhi. The Beat Electric is not proposed for sale anytime quickly, but India was chosen as a demanding atmosphere – as properly as expanding marketplace – to demonstrate the automobile.
It is powered by a 300-cell, 20-kWh, liquid-cooled, lithium-ion battery similar to what is in the Chevrolet Volt, but bigger for the smaller, but non-range-extended car.
